That axle is on the bottom of my concern list. A friend of mine wants it. He collects lots of worthless s_ _t.
If you are installing a mild motor with an automatic the rear assembly in place now may be fine for your needs.
First off, congratulations on such a great find! Two vehicles on my bucket list: '56 Nomad (check), '40 Ford coupe (hopefully before I'm on the wrong side of the grass!), so I am a little bit envious! I like your plans for it; sounds "just right!" Keep us posted!
Thanks for all the interest guys. I have never received this many replies to a thread. I'm just another lifelong (67) old car nut and I'm thinkin' this is going to be the last car I build. That means I'm keeping it, not croaking any time soon. I have a '46 Ford pickup that I built 22 years ago. My youngest son has laid claim to it. I'm thinking my oldest son will get this '40, then my grandson....yadda yadda. The car is in the shop right now on jack stands and the pieces are already coming off. I'm having a tough time with the bolts and caged nuts holding the fenders on. I've been soaking them and will keep trying. Got suggestions?
it's a 40 standard for sure. The 40 standard only came with one taillight. As you can see someone cut the left fender to install a second light. Great score, you are going to have fun with this car., I.rant you are correct awesome gaps. The grille looks excellent also. chuck
Hey '40 experts I've got a 8" rear axle from a '64 Fairlane lined up and all I know is that it is fairly narrow. That chart that pops up in various places on here is a great resource but it omits the width for the '64 Fairlane, but does show the width for '64/'65 Falcon as 58" (ideal for Chassis Eng parallel leaf kit). Does anyone have any idea about the Fairlane unit?
Looks like you have a 39 fender on the left rear as the hole is hand cut and not matching the RR one. Std. cars had only one taillamp on the left rear fender. Is the dash a 40 Std. with rectangular instrument panel and arc-sweep speedometer?

I've been working on my '40 Deluxe for almost six years. We're actually putting it back together at the present - it feels so good to be putting parts "on" instead of taking parts "off". If I could do any one thing over again I think I would put a standard hood and grill on the car instead of the deluxe hood/grill. The standard grill in full chrome is just awesome looking. You've found a beauty, good luck with the build. And if it makes you feel any better, one side of my car had sat exposed to the weather in a shed for years. Just about every nut/bolt on that side of the car broke when we took it apart. The other side came apart with no trouble. But it was still fun to take apart!

Among the cars I saw at his place were; Show quality '39 Ford convertible sedan with hot flathead. Bought it in a basket when he was 21 fo $75 High quality street rod '48 Ford Panel with big block Ford Show quality '50 Ford Custom club coupe. Beautiful dark blue, 6cyl Show quality '34 Ford p.u. "sectioned", full fendered Beautiful bright red '53 Ford convert, stick with O/D About half a dozen other Fords. Too dazed to remember what they were
Definitely a '40. '39 has roll out windshield and wipers above w/s. '40 w/s does not open and wipers are below w/s.
