Finding a Dragmaster original decal might be kind of hard for the following reasons.

There are people making reproductions of this decal in water transfer style but they are not made the way the originals were made and that is a problem.

The originals were silk screened and then printed while many of the new ones are printed on an ink jet printer which does not use water proof inks so they then apply of sort of a sealer over the top of them to protect them.

I started making water transfer style decals back in 2002 using an Alps Printer which does use water proof ink and it also prints using white ink which at the time was very rare since most printers don't print using white ink. They simply print on a white substrate.

I had a total of four Alps Printers but they have not been manufactured in years and finding parts is not easy. When my last working Alps printer stopped working I purchased a new wide format printer which cost about $16,000 dollars at the time.

The problem with finding an original old water transfer decal is that they used to crack and yellow over time and many that were not installed on car windows were pinned on a wall in a shop putting holes in them.

Finding one today that when put in warm water will not float of the backing paper in a hundred pieces is not easy.

Don Pennington passed away recently and he was a very interesting person with many different interests.

He was a graphic designer and he recreated many old decals in a water transfer style.

I am not sure if is business is still in operation at this point but I thought I would post a link to his site in memory of his great work he did.

  12. Here's one I picked up off of EBay or at the Charlotte auto fair about 10 years ago. Water transfer and big. Decal is 8 3/4"x 6".
Looks like its in decent shape but I wouldn't want to try to use it.

Found this one a while back. It's only about two inches in diameter.

And everybody had one of these back in the day.

  22. Any one would do, but I like the middle one best. I grew up in the same town as Dode Martin. One of my best buddys in high school used to call him Uncle Dode. He's still around and I see him on occasion. I would love to find an old Dragmaster decal in decent shape and run it on my truck. I think Dode would get a kick out of it.

  23. I hear what you're saying, Jimbo. I would like to find an original that was in good enough shape to use but I know I'm probably dreamin'. Thanks for your insight and explanation of the process.

I bought a Harman & Collins one for my roadster reproduction but it looks more like a laminated magazine cutout than a real decal, kinda disappointed. It's really thick and I'm not confident it's going to stay stuck on my oil filter where I put it.

I got this one at a swap meet for $1 but I don't think it'll transfer anymore so I just framed it. Haven't seen another one like it yet, anyone have an idea of age?

One poster comment was the following,

Sounds like it might have been made using an indoor printer and when they make them with this style of printer the only way to make it waterproof is to laminate over the face of the decal to protect it from the weather.

That's why it feels so thick to you. When they are made using an outdoor wide format printer and the right vinyl they do not need lamination in my opinion.

If it a sign hanging outside and exposed the the weather 24 hours a day and seven day's a week then I might laminate it.
