Technical Does any one have info on how to tell apart a 312 from a 272 or 292?

    Trying to buy a 312 but been hearing that it is hard to tell a 312 from a 272 or 292 if there is anyone out there that can help me i would appreciate it
     
  2. rods and crank....57+ year old engine any head could be on it. Blocks have the same casting number.

    The only sure way to tell if it's a 312 is to pull the pan & ck for ECZ stamping on the main caps. The raised dot on the crankshaft flange isn't always reliable. Some 312s don't have the dot. Fro the best information on Yblocks go to John Mummerts www.ford-y-block.com He lists all the stamping numbers for Yblocks, where to find them & what year they are. He also has a bunch of speed parts for Yblocks.

    ECZ is cast on the block by the distributer.

    Could also be a 56 292. Still need to ck the main caps.
