Not a hot rod but I'm still pretty proud of it. I bought this clock at Charlotte back in April & just recently got it done. I think it turned out super. I have a bad weak spot for old neon and clocks. Combine them & I just get beside myself. I thought a few here might like it. JH
That's a cool clock, was the neon still working or did you replace it? I have an old Mexican beer neon and the tube that says "Cerveza" is broken. Sure would like to find someone who know how to fix that.
Theres a couple of great vintage neon guys in Austin that could help you - Todd Sanders at Roadhouse Relics http://www.roadhouserelics.com/ or Evan Voyles at the Neon Jungle http://www.theneonjungle.com/ both are car guys too - and do top notch neon work...
One of the guys here is a neon sign builder....""Curt Six", I think. He might be willing to do the work.
Another small-town guy here in Seabrook, Texas(near Galveston) 281-326-NEON. He used to make the custom neon stuff for us fifteen years ago when I was in the sign business.
Nice job on your clock JH! I bought an old Aztec neon clock at an auction awhile back for $10! It was still hanging on an old gas station and I think everyone was concerned about how they would get it down. Luckily my inlaws lived in town, so I borrowed the biggest ladder they had and got it down. I restored it and it hangs in my garage now. I think it was on that old gas station since it was new. I've got several others too, they are addicting!
Haha,A little neon is good for the soul... at least mine. I trace that back to an old movie theater that we converted to a shop in the 70's. An old clock with a light blue neon ring would cast such a warm glow through that place. I've tried to capture that in my current shop but its just not quite the same with the repop clock...
I'd be happy to help you out. Drop me a PM and I can let you know what info I need to get you fixed up with a new piece. Curt
The green is original. I had the blue & red rings made. The same guy had an Aztec in pieces that needed a total restoration. He was asking $400 for it. I almost bought it but eventually, wisely, passed. JH
OK guys, someone post a photo of an "Aztec" so I can know what you're talking about about. The only Aztec I know of is Aztec brewing and a neon from there would be killer. I like the sign in the garage. I recently bought a 7'X7' "Bertone Pininfarina" dealership sign and plan to put it up at one end of the garage. It has about 6 flourescent tubes in it and should light up the whole garage. If I can get all the junk out of my garage, that is.
Neon is Very cool to own, My buddy has MUCHO old neon around his place including many clocks & signs. I only have an old SCHLITZ beer sign & an old Dealer Window hanger that says: DeSoto Fire Dome V-Eight I like the Dealership signs myself !!
I stopped at lunch to check on a neon "OFFICE" sign that is about 20" long & 8" high. The letters are about 4". The neon is red. They are remodeling the roach motel it is hanging on. I'm hoping I can get it. JH
I'm a neon clock fanatic too, at one point I had 30+ now I'm down to two, a Travel Time and and Cleveland Bubble, I've got tons of other clocks still, a bunch of George Nelsons and other mid century modern jobs.
Bob, I'd love to post pictures . . . but I'm a little "technolgy challenged". My wife helped me post some once, but I can't remember how now. I'll have to sit down and figure it out one of these days. But as they say - it won't be today, and tomorrow doesn't look good either! Al
I had one, mine was rough, there was a huge rust hole in the bottom, I repaired it with a garden hose holder, you know those metal things you nail to the wall? Perfect contour and the ribs almost match up too. It looked pretty good when I was done with it. I had a Coca Cola Cleveland one, I wish I still had it, it's prolly worth $3-4000 now, mine was mint. Another favorite I let go was a Cleveland bubble with a bunch of bullet holes in the plastic cover and face, it added to the charm of it. Another clock I owned (for a spell) was a tabletop bullet Glo-Dial, I bought it for $120 at an an antique fair and for the rest of the day this dude followed me around and kept offering me more and more for it, $200, $250, $275, finally I gave up and sold it to him for $650, pretty good profit for holding something for a few hours. Still I wish I hadn't sold it. My fave neon that I still own is a sign that says Dry Good, it clearly said Dry Goods at one time but the S broke off and that's how it was repaired, Dry Good, Wet Bad. Harrison, you got good taste, if I find an Aztec for a decent price I'll let you know first.
Neon, I grew up in Vegas, you got to love Neon, Heck we even got a neon museum going up with some of the old casino signs repaired and glowing, I love the stuff. yruhot....Doug
