I need a balancer for my new crate 350. Unsure if I should go with a new GM 6272222 balancer for roughly $100 plus shipping or a new Dorman unit for half that much - shipped to my door. I'm not against spending the extra $$$ but if the Dorman part is basically the same thing..... I could stand to save $60-$70 right now. Seeing that it's a new crate motor from GM, I'm leaning towards just springing for the GM balancer though. Any thoughts? TIA, JH
I'm no mechanic. That's why I let someone that knew what they were doing build the engine. They recommended the 6272222 8" balancer. I try not to argue with people smarter than I am. (Which may explain why I don't get into many arguments. ) JH
Who knows how well the crate engine is balanced? Use the 8" and be sure you timing chain cover matches. I've never used a dorman balancer but have used plenty of their replacement parts. Never an issue. A new balancer has to be better than the crusty originals that a lot of people reuse.
do a little research on your balancer. there should be paper work with crate motor telling you what balancer to use. if not, google it. theres a bunch on there on gm crates. make sure you dont get a 8 inch 305 balancer, timing marks in wrong spot. just went threw all this. if you bought the 350/290 h.p. the timing mark will be very close to lining up with the keyway in the balancer, if not its for a 305.
"I try not to argue with people smarter than I am. (Which may explain why I don't get into many arguments. )" Subtle.. I like it
I've used the dorman balancer on my last three builds with no problems. Dorman actually has a lot of Improved oem items.. O'Reilly stocks the balancers and my local O'Reilly price match's so no shipping charges..
