No pics, but my 50 chev has the pedals through the floor and the switch was mounted on the firewall underneath the column from factory

I mounted mine on the floor, next to the brake arm. Bent the switch arm, so it activates at the slightest brake pressure. Works great.

My '51 Chevy has the same thing, however, my '49 Ford has a hydraulic pressure switch.

Still haven't figured it out yet?

  9. That switch looks identical to the one in my 55 Pontiac.

  10. A few cars/trucks run them in stock form (late 50's chevy truck). Aftermarket ones you can choose left or right arm and normally open or normally closed.

I had that one in the garage, when it goes out I'll find one with the arm exiting out the other side so it won't get water inside it.

I run this vertically under my brake pedal on the firewall side. Adjustable. I also run the transmission lock up through it as well. No issues. Similar to #5 but 90 degrees difference.

You can also install one under the clutch pedal for a start safety switch,....GM did that on std shift cars in the late 60's. The clutch pedal must be depressed, in order for the starter to operate. My 40 pickup has one.

Why not plumb in a hydraulic pressure switch, no fussing with brakets and linkage.

  15. new version goes out a lot and sometimes you get a switch that doesn't light up under a lite pedal push. Too much variance in quality.

Reviving this thread because I need to order a mechanical brake light switch and not sure if I need the RH or LH model. Can someone please tell me which way each turns on - toward the mounting base or away from the mounting base? Can you pull them apart and reverse the arm?

Both of those are in the closed position or off. You just need to decide which one will work for you. That picture is awful small.

This is how I mounted the brake light switch on my 50 Merc. Upgraded to a dual res m/c. I used a wiring harness from a 71 c10.

I really like that setup. I'll order an inline switch and do it that way. Thanks!

  21. We fought this on our 32 and finally figured a brake line pressure switch was the simple way to go for us....

Afraid I have to disagree with Tfeverfred on that one, both shown are "on" (lever away from base). And the right or left hand thing is only a matter of where it fits and which way you want terminals to point, up or down. And no, I 've never seen one you can reverse the arm on.

That underfloor switch also makes a great start safety switch, when mounted under the clutch pedal.
