Some time in the past 20 years I aquired a 9" rear all set up with brackets installed for a 4 bar, I only have the housing and 4 bar no axles or pumpkin. The rear is 52" wide so how can I possibly identify what it is from? How do I identify the axle offset? I was hoping to use it in my T coupe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I installed a curry 9" axle for our foxbody mustang . It measured 52 1/4" end to end of the housing itself no backerplates or axles. If you google search foxbody 9" rear. That should give you measurements for the 4 bar hook up and total specs. Goodluck Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If you know the housing is 52", then I will assume you know how to use measuring instruments. If that is the case, you can determine the axle shaft length and bearing bore size. The year and model really doesn't matter. The ring gear is in the left side of the housing as viewed from the rear. This will likely be the short axle shaft.
Here is a online chart of rear ends. These are from axle flange to axle flange (overall measurement) Steve http://www.carnut.com/specs/rear.html

Also some good info here: http://www.maliburacing.com/ford_9_inch/ford_nine_inch.htm Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
as 57 heap said, the specific source of the 9" isn't near as important as the dimensions, considering most parts are interchangeable as well as the strong aftermarket/custom length following.
I like Tagmans chart BUT there is no mention on 57 Mercury that also was 52" wide like the Fords. I am curious to know if 58 and 59 Mercurys were also the same? Oldmics
Scrap it!! Go get a 8.8 explorer axle with disk brakes. Straight tubes, stronger shafts, Limited slip. You can get one complete for less than $200. Put your 4-bar on that.
ED I think you must have an 8" small bearing 28 splne housing according to chart width and years which apply for that width. I think the offset would be 2 1/4 inch. unless the housing is not stock and has been narrowed. I will try to check the info I have. Steve
Steve, Your right it could be anything. I have a 57 truck rear and I know that it is 3:50 gear real narrow compared to the others in the stack. I will just drag it in and use it for mock up then build the frame around. I have a pumpkin that is posi and I will check some of my other housings. I never used a 4 bar set up so I will stick with the ladder bars. No need to go a different direction at this point. Ed
i would say, its hard to tell w/o it being complete ... the 8" that i have laying around ( which is complete down to the tag on the housing ) came out of a late 6os vehicle ( and and decoded it awhile back and yet to find something to put it in tho ) .... better off finding something that doesnt involve to much it cost .... scrap yards yield alot of possibilities ... IMO
I really wish that there were scrap yards. Well Steve is right it is a 8" I put a 8" pumpkin on the housing and it lines up perfectly. Too bad I plan on a bit more power than the last one. The center chunk is a 2:66 posi center but I don't think it would survive. Thanks to all for the help.
