So im just wondering about transmission options for ford V8 flathead engines. Im building a T bucket and plan on running a flathead in it. I already have an engine but no trans, and i want to know if there are any alternatives to the 3 speed toploaders. Not that theres anything wrong with the 3 speeds, probably what im gonna end up using, but is there a better option? i plan on driving the car alot so something with an overdrive and synchronized gears would be great. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks
Since no one else has reponded, I will. One answer T-5. Do a search here and you will find all you need to know.
Althought it might depend on the rear end. If you want a stick, t5 is fairly common and a good choice if.... But If you want to keep the torque tube (if it even has one) then its a bit more limited. So if it is an open drive... Well then... But its a t bucket... So really it could have anything there......
I put a 60hp in my mgtd with a Ford 3-speed, was worse than an original mgtd 4-speed. Put in a Mustang t-5, well worth the work involved. Check out "flathead ernie" for t-5 info. Marvin,ct
Thanks for the input guys. I had never even considered using a t-5. Lots of good tech articles on here on doing it so it might be a good option.
