I'm interested in typical means of hooking the engine to the rear. I've seen everything from homemade couplers to early Ford boxes, gutted and otherwise. There was usually some type of scatter shield, 1/4"-3/8" plate and a nut protector over the rear and drive coupler. Most rears were narrowed '46-'48 Ford units with the spider gears welded to lock both axles. Rear brakes were just Ford drums and a hand stick.

I'm using some Scotty Fenn plans dated February 24, 1958 I got from Rich Venza on here. The entire chassis is only 120" long with a wheelbase of 108". I'd post up pics but it's currently spread out over three buildings until I get space to work on it again.

I using a 301 Chevy with 6x2 on it.

Koz, it will all come down to what you use between the motor and rear axle. I have seen driect drive, clutch-flights, if you can think of it I seen it. I have a Scotty Fenn K-88 car with a SBC with a tubro 350 hooked to the banjo rear end, with just a U-Joint, from the trans slip yoke to rear pinon yoke. Just changed it over to the Hot Rod Works set up for the banjo, nice set up, Thom at Godspeed Rides made my new U-Joint cover. Here is a few pics of it.

Thanks! Those pics help a lot. I'm leaning toward the gutted '78 case box and just a short single joint torque tube.

Gee's fedman what a shame that car is retired. How come?? Beautiful proportions . Tell me to piss off if I'm being nosey, but it seems a pity that cars like this are sitting around or just being cackled.

I do not think you are being nosy to ask why the car is retired.
At the end of the 2008 season I was 49 years old and had been racing almost without break since I was a teen.

The start of the 1993 season was the first year that I ran a blown engine, my own build with virtually no real experience with a supercharger. I built it using a Flat Tappet Camshaft, against all conventional wisdom I know. We were at that time restricted to a 7.50 and slower ET

The Car Ran easy 7.50s at 183MPH using a throttle stop. We ran like that until the end of the 2002 season. In that time span, we won 5 Different Track Championships, and had a lot of fun and success with the car.

We wanted to run a 6 Second pass so we back halved the Chassis, installed a floater rear end, and got our Advanced ET Tag, good down to 6.00
We went out half way through the 2003 season ready to try, still using the outdated baby Camshaft. We struggled the rest of that year trying to run quicker than a 7.35 At that time my wife and I had help from our friend Pat and his wife Kim for the last 10 years. Pat was diagnosed with Cancer at about this time and the outcome was not to be good.

We were ready for the start of the 2004 season and again found how hard it is to go fast, we were burning pistons and hurting (lifting) the heads with additional blower boost constantly.

Slowly we were creeping up on our goal, somewhere in this time frame we ran over 195 MPH and that gave us a big confidence boost! We were spinning the Engine at 8200 in the lights at this point and the cam was really limiting our top end limit due to the lighter valve springs that the flat tappet required.

Start of the 2006 season and we could see the finish line, consistent 7.00s @ 193 but I also had become the machine shops best customer! We kept trying for the 6.99 and it took a ton of parts to get almost there.

Sadly our dear friend Pat lost his battle with cancer June 30/2006

We left the following weekend to race down south with heavy hearts.

The following weekend we were back home at our home track, Mission Raceway Park. The air was good and weather perfect.

Friday qualifying pass was a 7.01 but I had screwed up, and pulled the chute early! I had become gun shy on running it out the back in good air from all the damage we had been doing.

Saturday was another perfect day and after we had looked at the weather and the run data from Fridays pass we made the decision to add 1 more degree of timing to the Mag. We went from 34 Degrees and set it at 35, never had we run this much before. We hoped that it would help the car leave the line harder.

We lined up in the right hand lane and hoped it would work.
The car left, made a small move to the centre line came back to the centre of the lane and crossed the finish line, We had just run a 6.993 at 194MPH We were lucky to have this caught on film and to add to our excitement, my wife looked up into the sky and saw a large Bald Eagle circling high above the track looking down on us. We believe our friend Pat was with us on that run.

We ran the Car the next 2 years, but all the wind was out of my sails, the NHRA changed rules on us, Pat was still missed terribly, we had done with the baby camshaft what we had set out to do, and I was just burnt out. We parked the car in the shop under a cover and so that is why it sits retired.

Brian,I ran Super/Pro at Mission in the 90's with my 23T.It was always fun to see you run to just a few 100th of your et limit.Only once in those years did we race each other.When I saw you in the other lane I knew you'd do an 1/8 mile burnout so I shut off my engine.Which caused a lot of excitement,because the starting line crew thought I had a problem.When you about a 100 ft out I did my burnout.I ran 9:50's,you 7:50's.Quite a handycap.At about 1000ft I thought I might win,when I hear a bang It was your chute opening [I never knew they made a noise] we both ran our dial-ins. I lost by 1000 sec.That was a great race.

Hey Boyd, I remember your Altered, Cool Car!

Wow, I would have thought that you and I would have ran each other more than once for sure. I'm sorry but I don't recall the race that we had, but 1000th of second is a hell of a good race!

Thanks for the story, You certainly have had good and bad times with the car and your good friend Pat. I appreciate the answer as I guess many other hambers would have been interested also. As I said, The car is a credit to you and all your helpers.
