Lot's of street races originated out of this place. It is still a KFC, but not the cool hangout it was all those many years ago.

    WOW!
Watched a show on B-17's just a few days ago. The crewmembers were all talking about how much damage they could sustain and still fly. Still looks like this one is actually flying here.

Yes a 109 hit it.The only thing holding it together were the control cables. It landed safely and a few minutes after the crew left the plane it quitely broke in two.

35 or 36? I love casual shots of them in stock form before they got cut up into gassers (which I love too.)

Incredible photo. We had a great friend in our car club that passed a few years back who was a B-17 bombardier in the 452nd Bomber Group. I could listen to his stories of missions over Germany and limping their planes home for hours and wish he was still around.

Somebody just sent me a link to the story about that '17. They shot up a German fighter and killed the pilot. The out of control fighter sliced through the bomber. The crew used pieces of the fighter and their parachute straps to brace the airframe. They tried to get the tailgunner forward, but the shift in weight made the tail unstable, so the pilot asked him to stay in place.
When they got back over England it was suggested the crew bail out, but their parachutes were holding the plane together! They landed successfully with no injuries. Minutes after the last crewman got out, the fuselage collapsed.

If you have info why don't you put it on the original?

Not everything has info; doesn't mean info is accurate; slows posting down researching accuracy; deters subsequent stimulating conversation and guesses.

...a little problem with geography here. The postcard caption says Superior, WI but the scene is of Howard St. in Hibbing, MN. Having been in Hibbing more times than I can count, I recognize landmarks such as the Androy Hotel.
