Seems to be a lot of work for little benefit. Are you building an engine that will turn over 8,000 rpm?

If you are only spinning @ 4,000 rpm, I don't see the advantage.

I think money better spent would be a hard chrome crank and insert bearings.

Harder surface = lower coefficient of friction

Also, bearing surface will last longer.

  9. Attached is a pic of my latest project based on a '25 T Tub which will use parts I have laying around including an A engine with a cam, dual carbs, ignition and a Winfield head, T5, 16" wires.

Does anyone know of any links to determine the historical info for the cast iron Mallory distributors? I have a YA 11a distributor (Model A) and have heard different dates for it's production run. One post suggested that they were used on combine engines in the late thirties.
This one does not have a serial # and does not look like it has seen daylight in many moons.

I am also looking for a source for the red cloth covered ignition wires and would like to have an extra cap/rotor/points.

    Thanks!

    Hi guys,

After searching to no avail, I've got another basic Model A question...

Does anything hold in the camshaft? I tried to tap it out (with the timing gear still on), but it only moved about 1/8". I don't see anything holding it in, but thought it wise to check here before I continue.

    Thanks

Have you removed the valves, valve springs, and tappets?

WOW! That really is something else! Would really like to hear some particulars about the engine and carbs. From an unnamed source perhaps ;)

  28. I just found this month's thread! Guess my head's getting too big for my helmet, eh?

CDO that is one COOL engine. If it's dyno'd, let us know what is does.

  29. Kinda a sad scene after CDO's post but here is my poor man's hop up kit:)
B model Zenith and an F3 B head.

The head is going to get the slow as molasses derusting hopefully starting this weekend. I had the carb on my car but wasn't happy with it. It ran WAY to rich. What should I have expected? It was a cheap swap meet score.

    Hey Bangers

I have not done anything new to my banger just drivven it. Went down to Germany, about 400 miles one way, and raced on an old airstrip. It was a 1/8 mile dragrace on concrete. I don't know what times you guys run but I managed to get a 9.96 ET. No trap speed recorded, but my speedometer said about 70mph. To be honest it was flag started and hand times the old school way. But I'm pretty happy. That was with my coupe, model B transmission, stock model A rearend and 7.50-16 Firestone bias ply.

I don't know if 9.96 is good, bad or ugly, but I won my class and I'm happy for it. It made the 800 miles roundtrip with no major troubles, just needed gas, oil, water and an occasional retightening of the magneto.

It was really fun to race and now I kind of regret that I built such a mild engine. Next one will be bad I promise.
