I am working a a 331 Hemi. I just installed the harmonic balancer that I bought from Hotheads. How far does it go on the crankshaft before it bottoms out? There is about 1/4 inch showing from the end of the crank. I know that is goes up against the oil slinger washer and locks the crankshaft gear for the timing chain.

Where's the old balancer? There's a line there where the crank was.

  3. Yea, I almost always measure the crank stickout before I install a balancer.
It's an Erie feeling not knowing for sure that its all the way on.
Those few times I forgot, I took it off to measure. I rarely forget now.

That's why I like to install the damper before the pan.

I only had four bolts holding the pan on so I took a peek at the crankshaft gear and the oil slinger, they are tight so I think I have it in the right spot. I checked the old balancer and the line it left exposed is the same as the new one. I will call Hotheads Monday and see what they say. Thanks for the help. I'm having fun rebuilding the old hemi. It is my first hemi. It will be the engine for my Model 28 roadster.

How about sharing some pics of the 28?
    Good luck.
