History Racecar Haulers of the Rich and Famous

  1. It's always been one of my favorites too, having seen it as a little kid. Made a lasting impression on me. It was rigs like these that inspired the transporter story.

Looks like the days when the only engine they had was in the race car.

Here's a couple of pictures of the truck I am restoring now. I am now 2 years into the restoration. The truck was totaled in 1976 and damage was a little more involved than I originally thought. You can see what the truck looked like when I got it two years ago and some of the restoration pics. It is back in the paint shop for the outside paint. Hopefully a bunch of pics to follow soon! On my website scroll down and look for "Vans "Mr. Chevy" truck.

  6. I just missed getting a single axle trailer for an open-wheel car. It was used for an Indianapolis car, I was told. The trailer had a single Model A front axle, same width as the race car, so the ramps went up and over the trailer wheels and back down in front. Back in the day, the money went into the race car.

  7. I thought this was a pretty slick set up.

Ah yes, but not nearly as fast as the W196 riding on the back.

The Mercedes-Benz W196 was the Mercedes-Benz Formula One entry in the 1954 and 1955 Formula One seasons, winning 9 of 12 races entered in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.

    Neat truck and car.

  12. While I was racking up part two of this feature, I couldn't help but notice that the Modified guys had a huge assortment of pretty fancy rigs, maybe even moreso than the drag racers. Interesting: homebuilt race cars, homebuilt transporters. For me it's a big part of the appeal.

Saw these mystery haulers at the Barret-Jackson in Reno. Guess, Prudhomme had them both restored.

For the low-buck oval or figure-8 racer in So-Cal in the 1960s the Hauler was usually some equipment owned by a salvage or wrecking yard. Most everyone else used a simple trailer.

And then there was the tow truck method.

The most expensive car hauler ever built (at the time in the '60s). The Ford turbine powered rig. Holman-Moody had it for years.

This has to be a pioneer race car hauler. I didn't know anyone even thought of it in the late 'teens or early '20s until I came across this on the boardtrack thread.
