Anyone know what kind of gears a 1/2 ton 40 pickup would have in the rear?

I did find a 3.78 in one of mine, but who knows how many times they've been swapped out over the years. You may get lucky:D

Man I hope it's not 4.11! 3.70 would be ok-

Mine was 4:11. It should be stamped on the banjo housing. They should be close to where the torque tube bolts on to the banjo.

  6. 4:11, 3.78 or if it was a v8-60...4.44's!!!

  7. My '40 pickup has the original rear end in it with 3.78:1 gears. I believe that was standard for the cars and pickups. I think that the 4.11:1 was an option. I have also heard of 4.44:1. You can tell what gears are in your case by a number stamped on the banjo. Can't remember how to decipher it but that info is on the ford barn.

There are 2 numbers stamped on top,
    Like 9/37.
Just divide the big number by the little number!

Available ratios from Ford were 3.54, 3.78, 4.11. The 4.44 was standard for v8-60 equipped 37-40 passenger and 37-39 commercial. 1940 commercial with v8-60 was 4.55.
As mentioned, there are numbers stamped in the bottom of the differential housing on the rib from the torque tube flange. Dividing the numbers will get you the ratio that the axle was equipped with. I like to manually check them also, even though I've only had one that had been changed and didn't match the stamped ratio.

  12. What he said, look on the rib.

What #7 said. I was told that same thing, by a Ford dealer in 1960.

I have a 36 banjo with 3.30 gears- that would be an awesome gear set for a driver wouldn't it? It's kinda tuff looking I'm gonna crack it open and see if they're any good-

I have a 34 rear with 9/3 stamped on the bottom-

Tuck, what is stamped on that 36 rear? Or did you check it some other way?
The 34 rear is likely 9 37 that was poorly stamped.

The stamp is weird it says 9 9 I need to ID the rear it has 36 bones and 39 backing plates with what looks like a shorter torq tube- no idea what it came off of- I was counting revolutions- the input is cut off but the axle shaft looks good-

I know Getz and probably others sold 3.21 gears for the banjos. Not sure what other ratios were available. I think there may have been quite a few.
