on the rot issue. check the lip of the hood,wherte the words go. ive seen 7 62s with rot there mine included. front fenders in the usual spots and around the back glass.this is from all the galaxies ive looked at in the last couple of yrs. mine included.the 390s were tough engines.but you got to remember that it is a 390. how was it driven.norlmal,say like 40 or 50 yr old woman would driv it or like a hotrodder would driveit. mines got the 352.not the fastest one on the road.but it was always driven pretty easy. this is the one the little old lady from Pasadena drove!

I have a 1962 500XL with a 390. It has been sitting for close to 10 years. Changes the fluids, got a battery, made sure everything was lubed up and it fired first try. I have had no issues with that motor.

I have had that car for 20 odd years, it has always been good to me. The Cruiseomatic needs a rebuild, but other than that no problems. Here it is a few years and many pounds ago.

It will have a 352 stamped on the front, don't let that mislead you. You'll have to get the block number or take his word...unless someone knows another way.
DandG is right, since it is really easy with FE's to swap cranks, and the casting marks visible on the outside only relate to the molds that the blocks were cast in, not the final machined part. The only way to know for sure is to crack it open and measure bore and stroke. In the past 51 years, previous owners and caretakers could have done any number of modifications to the engine to change it's displacement, and it will appear "stock" on the outside. Good Luck.
Yea did a search and it seems like just measure the stroke. Figured id ask. From the pic it looks like an Fe motor at least. From what ive heard seems like all Fe motors are good. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!

Yeah, pretty much all the same lower-body places any car of that age rots. Nothing unusual. Check the rain gutters, there's probably rust under the sealant. Engine - what do you expect from a 51-year-old car? Generally a tough engine, exhaust leaks at the head are a PITA, soldered brass header tank can be a routine source of coolant leaks, PCE-code Cruise-O-Matic transmission a good box but expertise in servicing them is thin these days.
One of my favorite cars to watch run at the drags was a black on black '62 Galaxie 406 with a 4 speed.
