That speaks well for the original cowl/firewall design, it did its job of being an early stye roll bar. Hope driver and car have a quick recovery. Bob

  5. Surprised at how little damage the car sustained.. and the driver wasn't maimed. Win, win. Hope he gets it back together soon.

Yeah he was pushing that car really hard through a narrow road course. He must be very wealthy indeed if he can afford to risk that car in a race that pushes it to the limits of its capabilities!

I talked to a guy once who vintage raced incredibly expensive cars like that... asked how he could risk something so valuable.
He didn't understand how someone could risk racing something so cheap.
If I wreck this car, really wreck it, and cause $25,000-$50,000 worth of damage to it, the car is still worth fixing. If someone wrecks their Corvette, it doesn't take much to do $30,000 worth of damage... why bother spending $30,000 to fix a $35,000 race car?"

    1. It's a BUGATTI.
    2. It's a pre-64 Race car.

That sucks. But glad to see he's confident it will get restored and racing again.
I can't believe all of the ignorant asses commenting on the video.

Love seeing people get out and push these old cars instead of letting them languish in a museum or garage collection. And yes, he was VERY, VERY lucky.

Well I suppose some people think that to be HAMB friendly a car has to look like it was just drug out of a junkyard or briar patch and have Ford emblems on it. The car is a 1924 open wheel race car that gets raced often and that's damned Hamb Friendly in my book 400K or not.

It's great to see it being raced rather than sitting in some museum with the tires dry rotting and half flat.

  20. I've had the pleasure of watching Augie Pabst race his Scarab against another (there are a total of 3) wheel to wheel for many laps at Road America many years ago. I couldn't imagine how they dared to subject those cars to the dangers of racing. Later I realized, these cars are chump change to their owners, if they get bent, it only takes money to fix them.

  21. Jim Sibley will have it fixed in a couple of hours...

That old Bugatti sure had a lot of positive camber, I doubt it ever cornered very well!

From what I've heard, Bugatti's have really nice balanced roadholding.

Amongst the very best that was available, at the time.

Except for the 4WD Hillclimb racers, like the one that killed Ettore Bugatti's son, Jean.

The Type 13 Brescia has been a popular choice for hillclimbs in the UK.

Here is a famous old pic of Raymond Mays in his.

Probably ruined an expensive pair of underware to boot. Glad the guy's OK, that could easily have had a much different outcome.

Bugatti used to say he built his cars to go, not to stop, and he used mechanical brakes for a long time after other manufacturers had switched to hydraulic systems. Maybe a cable snapped somewhere.
