Are the bolts for the starter straight across or staggered or both?

The last one I bought was a year ago and it had both.

  3. you can use either starter...just use the correct flywheel/flexplate for the starter of your choice

Not to hijack, but what about valve cover bolts? What pattern are they?

I have a GM crate engine, same as originaly stated. I have had it for some time. Its based off a 1987 350. It is able to accept both starter types, and the valve cover bolts are 4 at the edges....

it kinda depends on what yr block they use. but ive got a few blocks in the shop that can use either on.then again i have 2 that are drilled for the staggered only.

  12. Never saw a large journal chevy small block that couldn't accept either starter (prior to that the starter bolted to the bell housing). This was necessary so that any motor could fit any application.

Disclaimer: I could be wrong but I doubt it.

  13. This engine is built on the same block that is used for the GM universal 350 engine with parts catalog usage going back to 1976. Two piece rear main seal, left or right dipstick.
