Ya Mike, I just sent the two Holley 94 carbs off to Eric at GoCat Speed Shop in Englewood, CO. He builds some outrages flathead V8 motors and rebuilds all his 94/97 carbs himself in house. I am sure they will be right when I get them back and he engine tests all of them before he ships. Are you running a stock converter with that slant 6? What stall? What RPM can you get foot braking it on leave? We will get together sometime this season to be sure, but I got to get this slug right first.
so far with old carb and no tuning the hand brake holds around 1700 rpm and it is a stock trans and converter was told by a tranny guy they are around 2500 stall stock don't think the hand brake will hold back 2000 rpm ... in 2 1/2 weeks I can get some 60 foot times finish line rpms and e.t ......
Be very interested in 60' results. I am waiting to get the carbs back and tested on my motor, then pull motor/PG and have the converter softened up and have stall reset to 2500-2800 range.
Well it was a good weekend for me as I found a new (OLD) tow vehicle to pull my trailer. I was looking for a pickup or an early suburban. Found a 1969 GMC Suburban, only second owner with 73,030 original miles, Factory AC (front & rear), PS, PB, rebuilt 350 V8 with a 700R overdrive trans, newer interior with all three seats. Need to get hitch & trailer brakes installed when I get back. Had a good road test getting it home, 120 miles, 95 deg, up and over the Grapevine with the ac on, ran great with no issues.
Larry, long time no talk, those ET & 60 ft times you posted sure set a high bar for our regular races. Ya I think the ride was a great find and I have to thank my sole mate with the good eyes for spoting it last Sunday. I think it will work out real fine for the way I want to race. The real good stuff is 1) no more CA smog crap 2) no more CA one ton fee at $287 a year added to you already out of sight $300 registration on a 14 year old crew cab. I hate the CA DMV almost as much as NHRA, both are all about the money and don't care one bit about your ride.
their was so much vht down for the pro mods it was obscene . you couldn't miss.you have 3 options with a pro mod. 1`blow motor on burn out 2hit the wall before the 1/8 3 blow motor and hit the wall .on second thought you should go to the casino with that much luck
Great find, Tom. With gas going over 4 bucks for regular yesterday I'm thinking of towing with a Smart Car.
64 DODGE 440 -- Tom, I couldn't agree more, will work on that. bobw -- Bob, with what I save in registration will pay for a lot of gas. That crew cab diesel used a lot of fuel at 4.30 gal. Towing with a "smart Car" means changing your thinking on race car weight. 300racr -- Rich, I think it would make it AZ for some high dollar HAMBster match racing. Would you and Mike be interested in a road trip to Eagle Field next year for a HAMBster Shootout ( all HA/GR - HA/GMR - SDRA - NW Vintage Dragsters ) 1/8 mile flag start, run what you brung deal? I'm going to talk to Rocky and see if we can make it happen. I think we could have 10+ cars. I'll see what happens.
Tom, I may be up for that if the dates don't conflict with something else. Here is something else to think about for next year. The Inliners Convention will be around the same time as the Mile High Flathead/ Inliner Nationals In Denver.I think there is some Ha/Gr or SDRA cars up on the hill.
If there's anything I can do to help the cause, let me know.Eagle Field is one of the events I want to get to.
300racr -- Rich, it's just in the works stage and I won't be able to get with Rocky (toymaker) until I get home from back east. I'll keep you and Mike in the loop. I think it would be a hell of a lot of fun. old6 -- Dick, thanks for the offer, I new you would be in for something like this. Will talk to Rocky when I get back in July and see if it is a do able endeavor. It's like when you started the HA/GR thing out hear, you did not know it would catch on, but slowly it has. Now a few SDRA cars have added to the group and a few more from the NWVD. I think it would be fun to run a shootout with different cars set up different ways (sticks, automatics, L78/radials/8"slicks, big & little motors) all together. I think the flag start and the track surface will be a great equalizer to say nothing of the experience some have racing there. Call me a dreamer, but I think it will happen.
Sign me up too. When we get the car done we'll stage against anything. One of the best races I ever had was lining up in Dick's Brick against a NE-1 car last year. Almost as good as a top modified bike final round match up I had on a 250cc Suzuki against a 1000cc Sportster at Lyons back in '69. Always love being the underdog.
64 DODGE 440 -- Glad to have you on board Tom. I agree with you on staging with anything, it's all about making passes and having a good time with friends new and old. I hope we can see this through and make it happen. I still feel that the track surface and flag start will be a big equalizer.
Well, It's been a while But, The 300" ford motor long block is together. Trans has been put back together, Need torque converter. Paint Chassis, Reassemble the car and you will have another SDRA car ready...I've parked the Fiat. So it's finished for the year and maybe even for good... I've been watching all the goings on here, And got the itchy feet again...The reunion deal sounds great..Sorry Tom for using your page, But I guess I've lost mine, So I just borrowed a spot of yours..
Ha Dick glad to hear from you again and use this thread anytime buddy. Sounds like you are well on your way with the 300 Ford, hope you have it ready for the ANRA Finals in Oct. We have 2 cars done in AZ, Yours and mine, and Dan car being built in Jamestown,Northern CA. I will miss the June race but will make the Aug ANRA race. I am back east with my grandkids until July 10. When I get back I am going to get with Rocky and see if we can have a HAMBster (HA/GR - HA/GMR - SDRA - Pac NW Dragster) shootout at Eagle field next May. We could have 10-12 cars if everything works out. We have some good interest already, hope I can make it happen. My carbs (2-94's) are at GoCatSpeedShop in CO being checked out and motor tested, will pick them up on my way home. Going to have my converter softened up and stall reset to 2500-3000 range so I can get the rpm up and be able to hold car at the line better. Going to be a busy few weeks when I get home. Get back on the track OLD MAN I need all the help I can get.
Tom, don`t be in a hurry to come home. It was 112 degrees today. I can only imagine what it was in Bakersfield.
Ya Dan, that has to be a record for your place. Got to give a thumbs up to all the racers that are battling the heat at the ANRA race this weekend. Weather back here is more like end winter, lots of rain, 75-85% humidity, temp 55-75 degrees and much less tornado action. Spring has not got to MI yet.
Well I am getting real ancsy to start working on the carb/intake modifications and the converter changes. I will be picking up my rebuilt and motor tested pair of Holley 94's in CO on my way home. Will install them and test on the new mod 2x2 setup, intake is in place and ready for carbs. After test of rebuilt carbs I will pull motor/converter/trans to make converter changes. I may even try a used 8" with some mods in place of the tight 10" that is in place now. Will be a push to get it ready for the ANRA Summer race in Aug. Good building and racing to all HA/GR -- HA/GMR -- SDRA -- NWVD out there this summer and most of all have fun!!!!!!!!!!
Well we got home on the 4th just in time for our annual block fire works show, had some great food, few cold one's, and slept real well after a 12 hour push the last day. Had a great time with the grandkids last 6 weeks, around (3 basket ball, 27 baseball & 2 soccer games), you can never get this time back, miss them already. Good to be home even with the heat in the central valley ( 100 - 109 ) for last 10 days and more predicted of the next week before it cools to high 90's and I live here because it is 20 min from the track. Picked up my two rebuilt & tested carbs from GoCat Speed Shop on the third, look & operate great. Eric found out what was causing the stumble when I opened the carb (not enough fuel at the squirters, accelerate cup was on upside down from builder I got the carbs from). Will get them on in a few days and test on my motor. After I test the carbs on the motor and know all is OK then we move on to converter situation. Will dig out my old 8" race unit in the morning so I can take it to trans shop and see if it will work. Not much talk on the site, what's everyone doing?
Make a couple of 2hr carb work sessions in garage today (104 deg ), work for a while, go inside cool off for a few hours, then back out again. Got my rebuilt carbs mounted, plumbed, linkage changed a bit and ran the motor a few times. With the full load of gas from the accelerator pump the squirter's work fine and motor has no stumble when you hit the peddle hard and fast. So far , so good. I am going to play with my ignition timing and advance a little in the morning and see if I can get the motor to idle a little smoother and a few less RPM's. With the Clay Smith Cam that's in the motor she likes 900-1000 RPM. I have no problem with that if I can get the converter loosened up so I can hold car. With the 8" 5500 stall converter and 502" BBC Alcohol Injected motor in my NE-2 (8.60 index) would idle at 1800-2000 RPM, when you put it in gear RPM did not change and the car had to get up around 2800-3200 RPM to engage the converter. If I can get a converter set so it will idle at 1000 RPM with no real braking needed and run it up to 2800 RPM to leave I think it would work fine. Still may modify my old 8" converter. Going to start taking it apart Wed afternoon and hope to have motor/trans/converter out by the weekend. We will see what the old body has to say about all of this work and heat.
My old used 8" race converter will start to take hold when foot braking at 60% of it's rated stall, that 5500 converter will start pulling around 3300 RPM. This is all without a trans brake. We plan to open up the converter and reset to a 4500 stall. So it should start to come in around 2500 - 2700 RPM range. Going to talk it over more with my trans guy (has a local race shop) when I get the 10" converter out in a few days. If I use the 8" converter it is setup for a 30 spline TH Shaft and I may change my PG input from a stock 15 spline. See what we come up with. Got my rebuilt carbs set and changed the timing a few degrees back to 32, motor sounds real good. The new intake setup wants more fuel and we may have to make a jet change at the track, we will see. The old body was good for two 2hr work sessions today (102 deg), but I got some stuff off the car. Going to modify my rear trans mount and Shifter pad (going to be bolt in) so I don't have to pull the motor. Should have set it that way the first time.
The heat takes it out of us senior citizens. Good to hear the carbs are working well. It's good you have a converter wot work with. They ain't cheap. Curious to hear what your converter guy suggests.
Ya bob, with this weather is a little hard to get into working on the car. To make it harder the humidity has jumped up and it's like a sauna outside, most say that it is not as bad as in MI or your area. Got the rear chassis cross member cut out and modified so I can bold it back in, much better to get the trans out without taking the engine with it. Also cut my loop that holds the shifter in place, it bolts back in now and makes it much easer to install the trans cover flooring. Your right about these race convertors, mine is not a high dollar unit (Continental 8" 5500 stall) and I have $600 in it and it's not new. My trans guy said that as it was setup for a 800 HP BBC that had the power to stall the unit with a foot brake setup in the 4200-4600 range (real loose) that the 6 cylinder motor with so much less power will automatically tighten up the unit and he thinks 2800-3000 RPM may be max stall off a foot brake. It will be good for a 2200-2500 RPM leave. We will see in a few weeks if it was the correct call. Got to have it ready to race end Aug.
