Ever heard of "smokers windows"?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Britton, May 20, 2013.

  1. I learned something the other day.
A friend of mine was checking my 47 tudor out and says, "Does it have smoker's windows in the back?" I look at him like he just tried to explain relativity when he reaches in the back, and rolls the rear window all the way up. Then he turns the window crank another 1/4 turn, and the window slides back about an inch!
I was dumbfounded! Larry was telling me that most of the Super Deluxe sedans came with them.
Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

My '37 Terraplane has them. When you crank down the windows they move backwards about 2 inches then go down into the door. Old advertisements show pictures of them. It is a large 4 door sedan and the rear quarter windows roll back about 4 inches when the crank is turned.

My 1939 Ford coupe has them on the front door windows and my old 1939 Ford four doors did to on fronts.
Never tried the rear windows. My 1941 Ford 2-door rear side windows no longer roll down. Someone removed the cranks and covered the shafts.
Sure didn't know that before! My new lesson for the day. ;)

They stopped making them when they realized kids in the back seat could get their fingers caught in the opening when trying to push their cigarette butts out.

    My 46 Chevy has those.
But they only slide back about two or three inches, they don't roll down afterwards. Its a coupe.

    Really cool feature I think.

I've got them on my 48. When I heard about them right here on the HAMB I ran out to the car to check it out. Pretty cool setup.

That's a new one for me-be interesting to see how that works

  26. I also had a '37 Terraplane Model 71 Brougham (2-door) that had this style of window. Very interesting design. It did not have vent windows, so this was the "vent"; but I'd never heard the term "smoker's windows" before. It was my first pre-war car, so I had never encountered them prior to my '37.

My 1936 Hupmobiles have them. I read somewhere that Henry Ford was too cheap - what a surprise - to pay the license fee for the patented smoker's window and waited until the patent expired before incorporating them in 1934. I understand that this is why the 1934 windows have the small sail panel at the rear of the window opening, while the 1933s do not....
