Well I have a 48 Anglia down from a friends shop in Ohio to fill the roof ! Gonna be a streetable drag car! Fiberglass front end, straight axle etc . so I started with a sheet of 18 gauge Started with a sheet of 18 gauge drew a grid then added crown ! loads of lead from the factory so i added it back to blend into the factory seams . HAvent filed it down yet also found it hard to take a picture of a top of a roof and show crown in 2 directions ! 8 hours is enough for one day of welding and grinding non stop !!
Looks really good as usual. Did you ewheel it to add crown? If so a piece that large did it take 2 people, One on each side? Also what was the pattern. Thanks John Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I hope you are welding it first, not using lead to fill the seam. the body will flex and you will get cracks in the leaded seam over time.
thanks guys!! thanks texas john I followed the grid i have on the sheet . nxcess there will be 200 inches of tig weld on the roof insert . only reason there is lead is to match up with the factory seams on the Anglia thanks SS . this is not my build I am just doing the roof file hammer dolly weld repeat
Most impressive. I too have an Anglia needing a roof insert, but my sheet metal skills are pretty basic. I have heard a roof of a Vega station wagon has the same crown and works well as an insert, but finding one these days that I can actually cut the roof off is next to impossible. So lay this on me in moron terms. I have an Anglia. I have a sheet of 18 gauge sheet metal. I also have a MIG welder. I however don't have an english wheel or any snazy metal working tools. Is there some way I can get the crown(s) to look correct? You make it look easy, but I might be over my head to tackle this on my car. Mine will be a strip only car with a BBC in it and I need it to be strong and prefer it to look well. Anything you can share with me? BTW thanks for friending me on FB! DC
I don't have all the metal working tools either. If I was doing it, I'd go the donor roof way. I'd make cardboard templates of the crown I wanted both directions, and take them with me to the local wrecking yard. Then just hold them up to various cars with roofs large enough to do the fill until you find one that's close. I've done this method for numerous areas on fill repairs, and it's always worked very well for me. Flop, Great looking fill! Looks like it's always had a full roof!
I cut the roof off a totalled 55 chev four door and used it on my chopped 33 chevy coupe. Before I put it on I tested it on my Anglia and it fit like a glove.
You can kinda see the roof fill in this pic. When I got it it had a the roof filled in with some kinda galvinized crap that looked like building flashing. My buddy put a fresh metal insert in and built a temp rear door untill someday I can restore the aluminum Thames doors. Ill take some pics of the inside and how he braced it up. LOVE THE ANGLIAS! LIL CAR BIG FUN..
if i just had a mig i would be out n the junk yards with a sawzall ! its still no joke of a project . tons of welding and removing the orig channel in the roof so you can access the welds . thanks 1971! good tip 10sec good looking stuff choprodz !! well i lost some crown during welding so i decided go make a hand held english wheel i couldnt spend 600 dollars on a new one so made this using the anvils from my large english wheel the top is nothing but a piece of solid stock with some brass bushings right side done
Double Dang!!! Flop got talent!! Body man and tool maker.........wish I had just a little of what you have my friend!
Flop, Most of my channel is already out so access woulnd't be an issue. But....after watching you pics, I think a salvage yard trip with a sawzall would be the best. Thanks for posting this.....you made my decision easy. DC
Pinto/Bobcat station wagons have very good roofs to use as fillers on 32 5W Coupes and other early cars.
hey thanks guys! got any pics mr gasser? that sounds awesome !! finally happy with the roof and shes leavin tomorrow !! thanks for following along guys !
Hey guys, I got lucky - in Australia they made a four door Anglia and the roof is one pce and exactly the same. Took me alittle while to find one
Flop: lookin good! and for others who need to do this, on NSRAUK, the use of an Austin Mini roof, turned front to back has been mentioned numerous times. There were other donors mentioned as well, but not models that were marketed in North America. Mini's were sold widely, should be able to find one on this side of the pond James
