I am freeking blown away by all the awesome rods. Thanks for posting all the photos. I took the time to look at them all and study them closely. I can't believe all the roadster pickups, pickups and utes. I would put your "Nats" on my bucket list but I need to win the lottery to do that. Looks like a super event and looks like everyone had a blast. Thanks again for posting all the great photos.

Its a 1962 Commer Van (seriously chopped), it sits on a F350 Chassis and runs 350 chev. It was built in South Australia and now belongs to some one in Queensland.

Come on Wayne, you have attended street rod nationals before. I am hanging to see your car again and I don't care what event its at.

You are right though there were hot rods at the event and alot of street rods. But it is still the largest gathering of pre 48 (mostly) modified vehicles in this country. I prefer the traditional hot rod events but they are few and far between in NSW. I am not talking about traditonal events though were everyone has imported stock/patina'd mid 50's-60's cars. I was there with the family, good to just get away. The problem with any run in this country is that people won't even attend events in their own town or down the road.

Oh yeah, I drove my hot rod up and back cost me 850 in premium fuel, damn you high compression!

I think it is an owner modified working with maybe a 35/36/37 coupe and using 37 headlights and a lot of other individual touches.If I can get other info I will let you know.It was running a rat motor(as the plate says).

I wasn't going to join this fray but Muzz is right.How many events of this scale can any rodder attend in this country.And I do believe that there were many HAMBers at this event.I wouldn't be surprised if HAMB members were over 20% of entrants even though their cars may not reflect that.

 I think that many HAMBers are a more diverse group than just the traditional hot rodder. Many own cars that strictly speaking don't fit the traditional hot rod definition but they still have the traditional hot rod philosophy in their blood.Sometimes it is more practical to have a car that serves the purpose they want but still have all the elements of a traditional hot rod.


 We don't have the raw material in this country to build a real traditional car now anyway and have to rely on repro parts that enable us to have a safe car and one that can be built within a reasonable time frame and budget.Perhaps we could call it the "new traditional hot rod".Also registratiobn requirements also play a major part in what gets on the road.

There are also people who make their living from selling these rodders the parts needed to build their rods,both traditional style and street rods depending on what they want.


The pendulum swings and personally I started in the late 60's with what I would consider a traditional rod for that time.I then moved a bit towards the street rod style later when family requirements dictated that and now I am back on the full circle and prefer the "traditional style".

Hey Muzz, good to hear from you! Yes been to some street rod nats, Penrith was memorable! After being involved on way or the other for over 35 years in the sport the people who drive the ASRF in my opinion have been regressive with maintaining progressive registration values rather than benchmarking cars against current street rod doctrine ie split radius rods, juice brakes, big and little wheels and tyres, fender exemptions etc etc . Take a trip over the ditch and see how shit hot the Kiwis do there rego with out the bullshit of the ASRF! Trying to get to Chopped in my coupe, maybe see you there! Cheers Wayne

[a Keith Black 426 hemi powers Liefys' '37 Willys roadster. I believe it has a a Gear Vendors overdrive unit hanging off the back of the 727 auto.]RodL

Hi Wayne

Had some prety interesting conversations with you on rego over the years regards rego rules.

Your point on "regressive" vs "progressive" is interesting. The guidelines on radius rods and juice brakes were negotiated in most states in the late 70's and at the time four bars and disk brakes were all the rage, and lots of information existed on why they were better. Because Australia already had prety onerous rego rules even then, much of that info got included into the guidelines. So "progressive" was what the majority of members wanted, and the ASRF is a membership based organisation so it follows majority opinion and put four bars and disks in the guidelines.

At that stage however they were just guidelines and mainly used for ASRF club rego schemes, and mechanisms existed for rods with split bones and juice brakes.

In the last couple of decades two things have happened. Rodding has entered a "regressive" phase where more people want to use 60's and early style builds/components and so some of the guidelines created in the 70's and 80's have come back too bite us, and secondly, the rego authorities have become way more organised and the guidelines have been turned into "rules" and are being applied to all rods, not just ASRF club rego

Because our members asked us too, we are trying to create more leeway for people to use split radius rods, juice brakes, side steer etc etc. Renegotiating a national set of guidelines with eight state departments isn't a quick process. We got some results in the current version of NSRG, and the new version is looking good. So we are trying to be "progressive" and change the guidelines to allow "regressive" build styles and components. Sounds better when you call it "Traditional"

Wheel rims will still have a 60% guideline, but the min and max widths will be subject to engineering approval not numbers in the guidelines. Government isn't going to budge on the 60% guideline, but at least an engineer has leeway to demonstrate otherwise

On the NZ thing you need to remember they only have one department to negotiate with, that department is more accomodating than many of ours, and they negotiated the current rule 30 years ago when they had an oportuinty to do so.
Their inspection processes are almost identical to ours, but are carried our by a semi-government body rather than volunteer TAC.
Not that different, just a few things that are way nicer in their guidelines

Paul, thanks for posting, nice win with your Roadster, Dave Winter's roadster was top dog last time if I remember correct. I was rostered to work at Brisbane Airport over Easter so did not make it. We are off to LA Roadster Show again in 36 days time (but who is counting down) Best Wishes

Personally, not recently. You'd want good chrome ('well baked') on these components. Shows up to 1970 approx., on some show cars.

Good posts. Everyone was pushing the performance envelope back in the 70's, I remember buying the idea that 4 bars & discs are superior. I still believe it, but now I'm a more careful driver and I'd be fine with drums/ hairpins.
Moot point anyway- for an old Holden owner.
