I painted myself into a corner in my build and now my exhaust manifold is very close to my firewall. Part of the manifold has only about 1/4 clearance from the firewall. The frame and firewall are done and painted, I can't go back now and change things. I would rather not use exhaust pipe wrap on my manifold. Is there something I can stick to the firewall to help keep the heat off. I am worried about the heat melting my sound deadening on the other side of the firewall. Its only about a 1" square area that is affected, where the manifold makes a 90 degree bend. There is plenty of clearance everywhere else. Its only this one spot.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?

    thank you,
    David

    not necessarily in that order.

You said it brother , not me.
If you only have 1/4 " I could see things actually rubbing. Not much can be stuck in there.
Can you grind off some of the manifold ?
Can you flat spot the manifold and weld a patch on it ? This is doable!!
    Dent the firewall?

Maybe combine grinding the manifold with an aluminum heat shield?

  4. Here is the best material on the market.

    Lydall -http://www.koolmat.com/zc.htm

A little expensive, but worth every penny.
If you look around on the net, you can find it for under $100 a sheet.

    Zero Clearance®
is a thin heat and sound barrier made from fiberglass and polyester with a tough aluminum facing for maximum insulation. A convenient pressure-sensitive adhesive makes it easy to secure to your vehicle's exterior.
    Available in 42" x 48" Sheets

It is/was used on Dodge Viper inside of the quarter panels, where the exhaust crosses side to side.
We use it to, insulate turbo chargers, from painted surfaces.
I also have on all fireall panels on the Divco.

How about modifying a cool looking stove pot rest? 3M makes black welding blankets you could cut a square from too.

Divco13 is right - Koolmat is spendy but worth every penny. I use it in all my builds and the Zero Clearance is what you need. Sometimes you just have to step up to the plate and pay the price. When the problem is solved you'll be glad you did....

  10. Word to the wise, this stuff sticks for ever.

Cut a pattern, check location TWICE !

Hint, peal back a corner, stick in place then peal off the rest of the backing !

Lay it down like it is a decal, FOREVER !!!! .

Check out McMaster-Carr, 609-259-8900, or check them out on line. They have a section on any kind of insulation you can think of. I know you said that you didn't want to use wrap on your car but I purchased thicker and better wrap at half the cost from them.
