Hi guys. I do not want to sell her, but this economy is killing me. Just wonderin what you guys would think she's worth, maybe not worth selling.
59 El Camino. 427(454 with 396 crank), 4 speed, quarters, floors and related rust repair done. Cheap but presentable paint with some waves, was intended only to seal until I could do it right, looks good from 20 feet. Interior needs done, and comes with a bed full of extra, new and N.O.S. parts. less than 1000 miles on engine.
Just lookin for opinions. I love this thing and don't want to let her go, and hope my O.T. cars will bring enough in to help.[IMG]

That's the last thing I'd sell, but life over toys. Do the right thing.

  3. If you have to sell it, I am truly sorry. That is one the best looking automotive designs ever in my opinion. The '59 Elky is on my dream list just below '64 Riviera.

Cool ride - as with any modified vehicle it is only worth what someone is willing to pay. do search here, eBay, craigslist & searchtempest.com to find something in your general area to compare it with. like others here, if I had cash laying around would love to own it.

I don't know what it's worth but it seems the 59 & 60 are the only el casinos I care for. Cool ride. I love the choice of parking spaces.

I'm not a Chevy guy so I won't try and put a price on that beauty, my favorite year elco by far. Keep your head up and look toward to the good things to come. If you have to sell you never know what's around the corner when it comes to finding new toys in the car world...I especially loved where your parked!!!

What is the deal with those parking spots? We don't have anything like that here.

Beautiful car....I hope you keep it. I couldn't form an opinion on it's value without seeing it in person.

  8. You must have some idea,,if you are pressed into selling don't try to get rich on the sale,,priced reasonably you shouldn't have a problem selling such a good looking truck. HRP

I would think somewhere around 15k but this is a very rough guess without seeing it. '59s are pretty rare. Assuming the mechanicals are in good shape. It's hard to put a solid price on this stuff. I have a '65 that I'm getting ready to sell and it should be about in the same $$ range. I've had a couple knowledgable car guys that buy and sell a lot tell me the El Caminos don't get the dollars that the Impalas or Chevelles get. Personally I prefer the El Caminos, so you just have to find that El Camino guy.
    Bitchin' car, good luck.

Maybe take the '59 on a cruise over to Kassabian Motors in Pleasanton, to test the waters.

If you are looking to get rid of everything and get something newer... Look at the price of monthly payments for a new/used vehicle that gets 30-40 mpg or more... you are looking at a $200-$300+ car payment, plus gas, plus repairs and general maintenance.

With the price of maintaining your vehicle that you own (i am assuming you own it outright and don't have leins), plus gas, and maintenance you are already ahead... not to mention newer vehicles are not cheap to fix anymore... $200-300 or more for a brake job, the same or double for general maintenance for a newer car... I just did my '64 chevy pickup's brakes all the way around for about $80... you can't beat that... and I know that it is done right. Every once in a while I get the environmental A-hole saying something stupid about my vehicles being bad for the environment or being gas eaters... yet here they are driving to work in their Prius to get more overtime because of their new monthly payment and everytime it shits the bed he has to blow all of his savings to fix it... then drive to work again for more overtime... I just give them the finger and keep on rolling.

I lived in California and understand gas prices... You could always install a small block chevy and sell the engine you have too (sounds like you could get a good sum for it)... that would be a cost savings gas wise rather than selling your vehicle outright, plus you may have some extra money. There isn't any shame in doing that, I have been forced to do that before... it sucks, but I was better off for doing it.

If you are absolutely fixed on selling it, then sell it to someone in the rust belt, i.e. anything east of the Mississippi. They will pay 2-3k over what something is worth if it is a California car.... why you ask?? because a majority are not very bright and assume California car = perfect with no rust.

I think you could probably get around 10k for it, not $15k or more from what others are saying... I could see it selling for that if the interior was okay and didn't need to be redone... I would say you could get more than $10k depending on how bad that paint is, how well it drove, what the interior looked like, etc. Try putting it on Evilbay with a reserve that you can live with and see if it gets that high... in my experience Evilbay bidders always bid about $3,000 to $4,000 under what something is worth and you wind up sitting on it for a while. They have a classifieds section there too if you are looking for something like that.. don't forget evilbay takes a huge chunk out of whatever you sell it for, so it may not even benefit you to do that

  12. I would do that, surely over $15K since its a solid car from what you say. You can always relist it if it doesn't sell. Heck, post it in the classifieds here.

In The Peoples Republic of California all clean air vehicles are treated with honor and given special parking spots.

Obviously toys shouldn't be a priority over family and health but the last thing you should do is sell something that makes you happy. Sell the things you don't care about. You'd be surprised how cheap you can find transportation now days. If you have to get rid of it, try and sell local so if you ever want it back you have a chance.

That year's the pinnacle for the El Camino in my opinion. They don't go for less the $10k around here it it's a driver.

Thanks for the advice guys. You confirmed my low and high estimates, and make me want to hold on to her even more. I got a 67 El camino and a Honda car for sale right now, and a bunch of parts going to a swap meet. I may try to sell off the 427 and put my 327 in it. won't have the same appeal as a big block 4 speed, but better than losing her. Tough times.
As for the parking space, welcome to Kalifornia. I hate Priusites. Park there every chance I get.

Just remember that these guys driving "Piouses" do not consider the amount of energy consumed to manufacture their vehicles from raw materials or the fact that they will be dead in a very much shorter lifespan than any 50's pu, batteries aren't very eco friendly to produce either, neither is the nuclear power station that provides the electricity. Apologies for the rant just my view on the subject.

Do what you have to do, sounds like you have it figured out now. That '67 should sell for a decent amount if it is in the same shape as your '59. Yeah the big block is awesome, but hard to hang onto with gas up and over $5.00 per gallon in your area... and you parking in that spot is hilarious :p

I would say $7-$9k depending on how it presents in person. I have been watching what all the '59 chevs are listing and selling for for some time now. I have seen a couple '59 and '60 elkys go for low money. Apparently many people are hurting for money these days.

Remind buyers that there were only about 22,000 caminos made in '59 and it's the first year. By comparison there were 72,000 convertables made that year and they bring $25,000-$65,000 all day long.

Without seeing the car in person though, nobody can give a truly accurate estimate of what it's worth.

I can't believe that is worth only 10k, I sold one in about the same condition (mine had a 348 though) for 8k 20 YEARS AGO. Surely they're worth more today. I'd say 15 at least.
I really regret selling mine, if I had some extra coin right now we would be talking.

  22. yup, do everything you can to keep it. but do the right thing if you have to.
I sold a wicked 46 chevy once when I had to, really hated it, wish I had it now ....

  23. sorry to hear....I'm still digging out myself but a little safer on the other side at the moment....always thought you had a nice El....and good ones - 59's - are hard to find....

best of luck in your recovery....

Many of us are in a similar boat and have experienced your dilemma. Keep your head up, be confident and positive. Get creative.

That being said, 59s are pretty cool for a lot of reasons. First time for 4 speed and for El Camino and for bubble top (I know, wrong term!)

Your car looks great. In that parking space it may only be worth 10k but out here probably more like 14k.

Lost this one recently. Not happy about it but....

The whole toy car market is depressed. Don't sell what you love if there is any other way for you to survive. I believe we're in a rebound but it is slow. It may be 5-10 years before we see prices for cars like they were five years ago. This actually may be a great time to buy for those with cash.

  28. I wouldn't sell for less than $15k, and I would expect to pay more than $15k as a buyer without a question.

Granted, mine was a '60 but I sold it very quickly for $5,500. It was a runner, but needed quarters, floors, paint, etc. It was a 348 car, but your 427/4-speed is sweet. Here's my 60:

I saw a sticker on the back of a car at Speed Week last year that read, "this hybrid burns rubber and gas". You should put that on your car then park there!
