Etched car windows

Not my style but Back in the 80s I would see classic cars (Cars of the Hamb Years) with etched windows of different art work, was that just a 80s thing or was that something that has been done for a long time? If you have any Pic please share.

I have seen so many cars screwed up with the etched glass,,popular in the late 70 -80's.

It went hand in had with the Easter egg colors and wild graphics. HRP

You saw a lot of window etching on the vans in the 70's, guess it was a "Hippie" thing.
My van didn't have etched windows. Some of it was pretty good quality work though.

Definitely very popular with the lowrider scene in the 80's and 90's. I remember seeing a lot of that in early lowrider magazines.

STILL popular in the lowrider scene, if you have a lowrider around here and your windows arent etched (acid or engraved) you arent shit.

How hard is it to get the acid for acid etching?

I thought it would be cool to add a small logo to a couple windows (like the plymouth ship).

Not huge and gaudy but small - something that would have most people asking "was that stock"?

About any craft store has what you need for acid etching on windows. Around here A.C. Moore.

Most on cars was sand blasted or machine etched.

ask Greg Guise (guiseart here on the board) about small vent window etching... he does diamond etching and he's an AMAZING artist... if you're considering doing this, he is the man

you can buy vinyl that looks like that also.....design it on a computer and cut it out on a vinyl cutter, peel and stick.

I bought a Mustang II a few years ago and it had this insanely detailed etching of the mustang running horse emblem on one side, and a cartoon of the actual mustang II with huge tires and stuff doing a burnout on the otherside. The car was a 4cyl automatic.

Back in the 80's, some of it was actually well done and complimented the car. It still could, but I'd be very careful. Like all fads, it got out of hand, once the masses got a hold of it. Lowriders get a pass because it's a "style" thing. It fits their cars.

Now, on a regular car, it's kinda like the stuff you see on isle 13 in the auto parts store. It's on the level of fake pistripes, dice valve stem caps and fuzzy steering wheel covers.

I have a buddy that does vinyl graphics - I had him do a pair of rat fink logos for my dads car - turned out pretty good. I may go this route for 'testing' before I actually etch....

The chemicals can be had at industrial chemical supply companies.
Ammonium biflouride and hydroflouric acid are 2 that work well. Use all precautions when handling.
An easier way is masking and glass beading. This is how gravestones are etched.

Not saying I like it, but would go with helping identify a stolen ride. You can repaint, change engines, but new glass is pricey. Just my 2 cents

Thanx, Fiddy!!
I've etched on glass and granite (tombstones/monuments) for many years... be glad to hand etch it for you if you would like. You could mail me the wings and I could have it done for you in a few days and mail them back.

Something small would catch the eye and be classy. The etchings got "out of control" because the customers wanted more and more complex artwork, like murals. Did a few myself. The technology has changed alot over the years and the etchings aren't as "deep" as they used to be. When I get done with a peice of glass, you can hardly feel where I've been as I am barely scuffing the very outmost layer... the old vibrating pencil method would actually score the glass and make it more likely to fall into your lap over a rough set of railroad tracks.

Let me know if I can help, I've shipped stuff to as far away as Japan with no breakage, so don't fret the shipping.

I am thinking about doing this on cars that I build. Better than a sticker. No way to remove it, without replacing expensive, and possibly hard-to-find glass.

I have a laser engraving business and have done a fair amount of windows - I usually mask the glass with vinyl, cut through it with the laser (and you can get a very detailed design) then blast it lightly with silicon carbide in my blast cabinet. A lot of trophy shops have laser engravers these days.
