I have a 1963 f100 unibody it has a CJ 429 in it from a 1971 mercury cougar. Im putting a new timing gear set on it. Ive been looking on google to figure out the timing and have had no luck does any body know the timing and at what RPM on a stock 1971 429 cobra jet?

Things have changed since 1971 just set total with as much advance as possible without pinging & so it will still crank over hot without pushing back on the starter.

Base timing? 10deg BTDC at idle w/vacuum advance plugged.

That's as far as my memory goes...trots to the shelf, pulls old Chilton...idle spec for sticks 500RPM (850RPM w/the fast-idle solenoid active), 600RPM automatic.

Bear in mind the whole world has changed in the past forty-odd years, I can't even begin to guess whether the advance curve Ford built into your distributor will like what we get for gasoline these days.
