I really have enjoyed reading this thread! I really like your truck ( and I don't say that about Ford trucks often:) )! This car will turn out to be super nice when done! Really good pictures as well documenting the build...

Plugging away on the steering arm. I'll figure out how I'll weld it up tomorrow at the shop, also some gusset work. Had to tack using oxy acet tonight, also nevermind the lower shock mounts, not using those.

Got some stuff done today. Started exhaust too, ordered a roll of material which came in today, some flanges, and some tubing for the header flange stubs, & went to town.

    Thanks Skater
Today I grafted my early 1940's steering wheel taper/key onto my F1 column, because I like the early 40's wheels better than the later splined wheels.
    Here's how I did it.
turned down a dowel key that would slip the two pieces together.
Then I faced the two column pieces .
Drilled holes for my rosette welds.
Clamped in angle iron for true
    [IMG]
    some nice hot welds.

Anyone have one of those long, early Ford truck column drops they want to sell me?

  12. I have one out of a 34 ford truck that someone cut instead of taking the steering column out the right way. The actual drop from the dash is intact but where the column mounts will need some serious attention. If you want it, its yours for shipping.

Did you mig weld or stick weld that steering arm piece? It looks nice.

For what it is worth, I also would have strong reservations trusting the arm that was heated and twisted in the manner that it was.

  15. Not off hand, I'll dig it out tomorrow and take a pic on instagram and tag you in it since I don't have a camera other than my phone camera. Or I could email it, either way works for me.

Ah, OK. I'm not familiar with Heli Arc. I taught myself to weld last year. Do you think Mig welding a steering component would be strong and safe enough or if I do one should I use a different method?

    Thanks,
    Brandon

    My input:

-Get another pitman arm and reverse it and reverse the bend, do not put a twist in it.

    - Bend that steering arm to the contour of the dropped axle, this get's your drag link closer to the same angle as your wishbone.

    - You placed a steel dowel in your steering shaft.....but now you can't run a horn rod or any wires in there.... I would re-thin this.

    That's my .03

    I love the build.

Thank you for the input. I see what you're saying about the pitman arm.

It's just an old term for TIG. If your base metal is prepared correctly, and your MIG is hot enough then yes.

Got my drop figured out, just got to come up with a bracket under the tank. It was the perfect length, I had to shim the column to the I.d. Of the rod with hose. Which acts like an isolator .

Oh hell yeah! I must admit I'm not a fan of pistons rods, but that is a wonderful way to swap my opinion! Nice work!
