I have a tin side v8 60 can somebody tell me if this engine is made in the usa or in europe perhaps the numbers can tell
V8 60...what year is it? Here is a thread with some info that may answer your question. There are several to be had with the search function (titles)
Tin sides were only made in 1937. As for the numbers cast in the bellhousing, maybe if you showed a pic that wasn't half shadow you might get some answers. But probably not since the meaning of most of the code numbers on a flathead bellhousing are unknown to anybody but the factory worker.
I guess that's only true for the North-American engines. The French didn't follow that rule. Is the engine out of the upstairs floor in the old shed in Chatillon? Then I assume French Vedette origins. There were plenty of tin-side V8s laying around on the floor: http://www.fomcc.de/gallery/schrott/2008/schrott2008.html
Most European Ford blocks have the serial stamped on them, whether US made or made over there. SOME early serial numbers would exclude USA Market ones, even though those engines were actually built here. Is there a number on manifold surface of block?
I might be of a little help, you see in the tin side block was 37 only, also the waterpumps for 37 only had a taper seat where they screw into the front cover,if your front cover has not been changed, you should have tapered waterpump seats, hope this helps.
Plus I believe the foriegn versions were using a type of regular distributor and were metric threaded bolts as well.try screwing nuts on the head studs and see.I'm will to say its USA made 1937 v8 60hp
A problem on ID is that v860 went into production during 1935 and was sold into Europe via England for almost 3 years before they tried them here...I think probably all the first several years were US produced and shipped to England and Europe, then French Ford was Sold off and 60 production with significant mods started over there. Ford England produced a complete car (model 62) for the 60 engine, differing from the regular USA models, and this became the basis for matFord and some German cars. The furrin variants like vertial distributor and such started after a few years of regular Ford stuff.
thanks for the replies so you say that my engine is built between 1935 and april 1937 because it was found in belgium am I correct ???
I foud a number on the intake surface after cleaning it it reads *54*146591 sorry for the blurry pic thanks jan
You might want to contact Denis Vole, an expert on the early SAF flatheads: http://dvole.free.fr/matford/toutes.htm
Mac shows that number as a 1937. Look at this page: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm
It then is a USA built engine, as all from beginning in 1935 were US built until later than that, but I do not know when England or Europe started actual production of 60 motors either as Ford or for the later French variants. The car it was in could have been either an American '37 or a British assembled US/Canada style Ford or a British Model 62... I think it becomes harder to tell in Holland or the Scandinavian countries because they could buy cars from any source. The bigger countries had tax systems that discouraged many possibilities.
The exhausts look right for USA car. I have seen different ones on pictures of foreign 60's but have no idea what sort of chassis they came out of.
