When I was a kid, all of my cars were either all primer or spotted with the stuff. My desire always was to have a nicly painted car. When I first started dating my wife I had a brand new '67 SS396 Chevelle. She was overheard at a party once saying, "he's the first guy I've dated whose car was all one color". That quote still comes up at parties to this day.
(this is a picture from last year. Thought the snow gave better contrast with the glossy paint)

My cars are all primered, underneath their paint!!

  6. I agree. On my '29 I drove it around for about a year without doors, with primer and spot putty all over the place. It was accepted without question by most, and I kind of hated to paint it after I built the doors. But I did, I guess mostly because it seemed to be the thing to do, now I wonder if it was worth the effort, because I drive it a lot and now after a couple of years there are some places that need to be fixed. On my next project, it will be a long.... long..... long....... long........... time before I cover up the primer.

Thanks for all the replies, so far looks like about three times as many painted as primered. Several of you still got old, original paint too , cool! I hope we hear from a lot more of you guys!

My '47 has the yellow centari paint put on there 35 years ago. It's still shiney, just cracking in spots. It'll do for a few more years until I repaint it. It would look like shit in primer.

Well-worn shiny paint on two, semi-flat black on the pickup. None of them qualify as show quality........

Part paint, part primer. I'm currently working on sanding, but don't have alot of time. So I have to do it in small segments. It's coming along though. It probably won't be painted in time for the Roundup though, once I'm done sanding, I'm focusing on the motor. I just wanted to stop the rust asap. But I definitely plan on painting.

paintis always the goal,,cuz primmer is what goes under the paint,

it is part of the journey,,unless the body of your ride is just way to shitty, then you have to leave it in primmer.

dont get me wrong, primmer is bitchin and looks cool,,ive had many rides that have never made it past primmer, but paint should always be the goal.

i got the original paint still with the exception of the flat hood, b/c that red oxide was taking over. under the advice of dondanno, i did buff it out, not too shabby, the red oxide accents the body lines, this pic is pre buff though.

So here is my ride in Primer, 1931 Chevy, Some body work has started just to get it looking good as I like to roll and not buff on paint. I'm thinking a satin paint if any. Any input from all as I have thick skin would be help full.

Paint or Primer is the question? What color paint? What color primer?

How about body work and sealed primer or tinted paint to looks like primer, the grey is growing on me but it needs to come off as you cant keep it clean and it sucks up oils and dirt and also water.

Considering it's been 8 years since this thread started, it's a wonder it won't get closed now. I don't know why this topic leads to drama, but it usually does.

Anyway, some cars can get away with primer, but I prefer a nice paint job.

Hotrodprimer, that Ranch Wagon looks cooler every time I see it.
