A similar look that bothers me a bit is the engine and interior maxxed out (Like a $5000 upholstery job, high-end guages)- with the outside of the car left "crusher-ready", or worse, fake "patina", distressed paint and letters, etc. I've been seeing it alot on the AD Chevy trucks.

  5. Nope, that is a "James" motorcycle. This truck belongs to Lyle Brown of Colville WA. The bike used to belong to his brother, Stan Brown, who was a good friend of mine. Stan Passed away a few years ago and left behind many "traditional / HAMB friendly" cars. A small sample of his collection besides the James motorcycle... a 39 merc coupe with original black paint (mild custom) and a 39 merc convertible mild custom . I have only met Lyle once, but have seen many of his hot rods some of which can be termed "traditional" while others fit other genre's...all very well thought out and well crafted. My 2-cents.

I hate the term "Rat Rod" but then I am 66 years old. I like "Patina" also, not "Rust Holes" now - I have always been told a man is like a weed when he stops growing he withers and dies.

Your little Truck is neat, seems to me the hitch is pulling a light load. ;)

  10. Yes that is a 39-46 James motocycle, I know cause I have one just like it here.......

I dont get what is the big deal about this truck or any remotely like it.
we in this hobby seem to want to ignore the historical end of the builds back in the day.
a lot of cars weer built that lack the "proper" proportions,THEN AND EVEN NOW...

also painted or paintless its his interpretation of a "
Hot rod" whatever the definition is or was.

We can lie to ourselves all day long ,but in all actuality this hobby was made up of mainly informal hot rods then and seemingly even today.

what is the degree of informality[patina/primer/deletion of or adding of body panels],that is acceptable to qualify one as a hot rod?

In my opinion we should just admit it....an stop bickering about a matter of taste or lack thereof.......
This hobby was built on rat rodding -why deny the facts?
maybe he was in process and awaiting a better finished prodct? who knows?

That truck looks great. I'd leave it finished just as it is.

Thank you. I could not have worded it better.

    Except I don't have the motorcycle. :)

  13. Another thing I notice in the hobby in this day and age-is whatever we think our "Trad Hotrod" is means one thing to us......
    .
But to the average person not in our hobby and even bigger half of us in our hobby, if it is not painted -chromed out the ass and upholstered with every single OEM part intact,
    iT IS a= rat rod.....
I for one have only had a couple of what I would call completely fffff"finished" cars in my 62 years here.....
Most of my cars were usually driven as completed with -mucho- criticism from the folks who saw me doing so.....or sold before finished to start a new one.....
Its enough to make a guy bitter,God forbid!

Hey, if you like your car a certain way, that should be enough. I may not like certain cars, like ricers or forign sports cars, but I can appreciate the creativity and craftmanship displayed; I don't take offense at someone else's opinion of my cars. I think the truck is neat, even if I wouldn't want one myself. I am 66 years old, have been car crazy all my life, and most of the rods I saw and admired in the 50's and 60's would be classified as rat rods today. Most guys could not afford to finish a car back then.

    SFTC.....(saved from the crusher)
In the eyes of the owner its a HOT ROD....that's all that matters...
Yea, if it was yours you would do this and that.....
Bling is just a statement.....catches your eye....right! (olds hood ornament)

wow... some of these so called anal traditionalist have been sittiing on thier car trophy,s yeah back in the 60,s you did this or that but put it in prospective lets use 1964. if you had a 1940 ford that is 24 year old car is like having a 1989 chevy pick up today.... most of them are still pretty decent traditional i get it... but it is all subjective i think the bottom line is if you enjoy it... and it makes you happy then don,t get much better than that baskins and robbins has been in business for 75 years serving 31 flavors not everyone likes the same flavor... lets find a red 32 ford coupe and have some vanalia ice cream..... just sayin
