I have a 383 small block crate engine (Patriot) ....We'll be running it at Bonneville. 6,000+RPM...... Any oil weight recommendations? I'm thinking synthetic oil may work best.

Why not call Patriot and see what they recommend?
    Just a thought.

Then I would not consider synthetic unless it is fortified with the appropriate amount of zinc dithiophosphate for use with flat tappets. Lots of threads on ZDDP on here and elsewhere.

I second this, just get a good high quality oil fortified with ZDDP, your cam will love you for it! Quaker State has a high mileage oil that comes in a maroon bottle, a little over fifteen bucks for five quarts at wally world.

  10. I'm a Engine Builder and if I built the engine, I would want and expect you to ask ME!!

  11. To prove I'm not a prick I'll try and help you. Did you get a build sheet with this engine? It would not be wise to make recommendations you are asking for without knowing bearing clearances and more, TR

Chaz, I've got a couple of extra cases of Mobile 1 Racing 0W-50 oil. It has high levels of ZDDP, and is full sythetic-it's what the Nascar guys run.

It sells for $16.99 quart, but I can't use it in this blown engine. If it would work for you, we could work something out, cheap!
