To be honest with you, if you really want a "WOW" black, lacquer is the way to go.

  5. After 7 pages of this crap I wouldn't blame the OP if he went with white!

Interesting answers here... Some of them. Some others, not so much.

It amazes me when people bother to speak up on a thread they either don't really care about, don't really know anything about, or don't really provide any real entertainment about...

The original question is an exceptionally good one.

There are many, many different blacks.

Using "straight toner" is an extremely poor way of ensuring the blackest black possible. Black toners are made from pigment of many, many different grades and tones.

Having been a technical person for an OEM automotive paint manufacturer for many years, I can tell you that even experts can sometimes not see the difference between the many black pigments available. This is why we mixed white toner 50/50 with our black toners and sprayed sample panels so it was easy to see the difference. If you do this, you will find a nice new color that can be blue/gray, light gray, light brown, etc. All different, and dramatically so.

The suggestions by others on specific paint recommendations are interesting. It would be fun to mix all of those recommendations 50/50 with a white paint to see how strong and how deep rich black those various colors actually are. You would more than likely be amazed at the differences.

And yes, a blue tone black is going to look more like a deep oily surface than the yellow/brown shades of black that just look muddy.

I know a lot of people that like the newer metallic blacks, but I think they just look muddy as well. Any interference in pure black tends to take away from what black should really look like in my opinion.

A great question from someone who is really thinking about the important details of their build. Look forward to hearing what you decide.

  17. This is a very insightful post.
The 50/50 mix with white and compairing test panels sounds interesting.
I suppose that type of testing results would be available someplace ? It would be expensive to duplicate. Pictures would be more interesting.
    What was the blackest ?

Back when we could buy acrylic lacquer I really liked RM Ebony Black. I sprayed my coupe in '99 with the RM. It was a true black, no blue or gray. Those days are gone. I agree that a clear over black looks plastic.

  26. I can still buy acrylic lacquer in the store any day of week. I know that yoy are in good old sunny calif but even though you cannot buy acrylic lacquer in the store it is still for sale on line, you can even by tints and mix your own candy.

Find info here is you are really interested:
