A little history for those interested in the so-called "factory wars" of the 60s. This article is from the March 2, 1964 issue of "Sports Illustrated.

Indybigjohn and others who might have known him:

I have just found out from the Stock Car Reunion site that Joe Carver passed away, must have been Friday or Saturday.

For those who don't know, Joe was a promoter and PR person. He ran Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and Langley Speedway and was involved with Darrell Waltrip for some time in a sports marketing venture.

"From the Newport News (Va) Daily Press:
Former Langley promoter Joe Carver dies at 76
    By Marty O'Brien, [email protected]
    7:30 p.m. EST, January 19, 2013
Joe Carver, one of the best-known promoters in Langley Speedway's 63-year history, died on Saturday. A resident of Concord, N.C., he was 76.
Carver moved from the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tenn. to become promoter of what was then known as Langley Field Speedway, serving at the track from 1973-83. .................................."

I'll start posting a few of Mike Alexander on Dog Fight now and then. I have mostly stuff when he ran with us at GA International, Nashville and several ALLPRO races in AL & FL. Also a few speedway photos also.

That would be amazing. I've been on the hunt for a pic of his dad in Richard Petty's 43 at Rockingham in 1966. Just bought an old Southern MotorSports Journal issue off ebay in hopes that it'll have one. But I'm betting Darel Jr. has even more treasures to offer. Heck, I'll volunteer to have him send pics to me and let me scan and post on his behalf!

+1 on that. Went to Nashville as a kid many nights from mid 70s to early 80s. First watched Mike in limited sportsman series battling drivers like Sonny Upchurch and then saw his first year of late models on the 5/8 track. In 76, we went weekly to see him, PB Crowell III, Sterling Marlin and Dennis Wiser race as the "kiddie corps".

The Orange Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina packed in the fans to watch the Grand National Race as the stock cars took to the dirt to battle for a rather small reward beyond the joy of winning.

Buck Baker took home his $3585 winner's purse after averaging a 100 mph race and Speedy Thompson came in second.

Demo, thanks. This video clip of the Occoneechee/Orange Speedway is a great look into stock car racing history. Always good to watch. Last summer I went to the Automobile and Racers Reunion where they were honoring the late Wendell Scott. It was pretty rainy that morning when I went, but here are a few shots I took of one of his early sportsman racer. Hope they come through.

Mike Taft's Mt. Clemens Speedway in Michigan 6 cyl sportsman. Around 1974. Originally had a 230 ci six, later a 250 ci six. Note the number. Mikes was 010, but the "1" was watercolored in. The painted number was actually 040. This was in case his team member, Harry Farr, whose car number was 040, couldn't make the Figure 8 feature with his car a wet rag would transform Mikes 010 into 040 and Harry had a ride. curtis taft "that's a '66 Chevelle SS396 4 speed tow car. I learned how to drive a manual trans in that car."

If this is violation of the rules let me know but they have been running vintage Nascar cars and some local historic events over the last couple of years so I have been getting some decent shots here's a few
