1954 Chevy Belair 235 Oil Change

Just to make things clear, I have 54 235 with PG and Factory Oil Canister. How many quarts does it take to do an change with the filter? My last 235 didn't have an oil filteration system.

My "56" 235 with a beehive filter takes 5 quarts.

I know this sounds a little stupid but how to you drain the oil in the canister now? at the hose? How much of the 5 qts do put in the canister with the new filter in?

The correct routing for the oil filter is, the hose comes out the bottom and goes to the bottom of the block. It all runs downhill. It drains itself when the motor is not running.

 

Yep, self draining filter, 5qts. oil, easy as can be.

 

Wipe the canister out also

Nope. Just put it in the engine, it will make it to the filter.

Interesting , my 54 filter tank does not self drain,does that mean something is wrong with mine?

 

Check and see if your return line is plugged

 

Well being I drove a 54 -235 for more years than I care to remember I can tell you with filter it takes 6 quarts. System without filter is 5 qts, add right at 1qt for the filter. Pour 5 qts in the engine after draining the old ,wait a few minutes and then read your dipstick. Unless the stick has been screwed with it should read full.
Normal A-C filter housings have the oil return hole high on the center tube so housing has oil in it when you pull the cover. My second purchase after a grease gun was a oil suction gun to empty the damm thing.

 

So John are you saying I should pour the last (6th quart) directly into the filter canister or the motor with the other 5 quarts?

 

Just pour it into the engine as that qt will get into the filter in a couple of minutes.

 

just remove the old filter, siphon the remaining oil out with a pump, install the new filter, add a quart of oil, put the top back on before you start it(dont ask how I know that one) and other than filling the crank your set.
Some of the add on filter canisters did not have pet cocks on them.

 

I happen to have a Fram canister off my 216 and it has a drain plug. By the way, I am not using it and if anyone is interested in buying it for 40 plus shipment, PM me
