I have some steel wheels that had light rust in the bead area, no pitting. I ro-loc'd the rust on out of there, getting ready to put tires on em.

Is it better to paint the bead area or leave it bare?

    Thanks in advance.

    Rashy,
I would look into the phospho treating of the rim seal lip. Then it would less likely to re-rust.
I suspect Metal-Prep or similar stuff.

factory and all other wheel manufacturers paint every part of the wheel unless they're ordered otherwise (ie: chromed or bare metal). If you leave it bare, moisture will get in there and you'll find your tires pinstriped with rust stains. And...moisture WILL get in there.

I coated some like that with por-15, and hand sanded them. It helped "level" the surface and fill in the pits while sealing the metal.

  8. Take it from my painter, paint the beads. She has years of experience in this matter. :D. This was taken 4 years ago and they do not leak.

If they're pitted much use bead sealer on top of the paint before you mount the tires

  11. I've smeared a thin coat of JB weld over the pitted areas to smooth the pits (after sandblasting). Sand down the JB smooth, then prime and paint the wheels. No chips, no rust, no leaks.
