Started tearing out the suspension today to redo all of the bushings... Does anyone know how to remove the spindle from the tie rod ends with the ball joint? I removed the top nut and it seems like it should just press out but it's got me wondering if it is threaded into the bottom part of the spindle??? Also... Does anyone happen to know if the chevy 605 power steering box will bolt right up or should I be looking for something from a tri five Buick/Pontiac? I'm used to building Chevy's and I'm now in uncharted territory so ANY advice/info anyone has is def. welcomed! Thanx in advance-
If you are taking the tie rod end off the steering arm the simple way is to take a big hammer and hit the end of the steering arm square on. You can also use a pickle fork but that usually tears up the rubber boot on the tie rod end or ball joint.
the 605 is supposed to be bolt in, and you use a pitman arm from a '56 with manual steering. I've been doing some research on that same swap. That guy on ebay that sells 605 boxes sent me a mess of pics of the box installed.
Have been looking for a replacement for some time - years ago - and my Hollander stated not interchangeable with any other than 56 Olds (like so often with 56 Olds parts... ). But if the 605 fits that's great news and really good to know! Please keep us posted on the progress/outcome. Jan
