sbc starter motors

    When did gm start useing the end bracket on the direct drive starters and did they all have them after a certain date or only the ones with the high torque starters?

    1962 on the 327. They used the brace on six cylinder models too....I think it was kind of hit-or-miss which ones had it.

    I'm guessing that is a brace to support end of the starter motor? Keith

    Righto, Keith. Off roaders suffered starter nose breakage when landing from short flights without these.
    Those starter motors weighed a lot, and inertia stepped in...

    Actually, the 153 tooth bracket is the one we saw most of, it was a curved length of 1" angle iron, holes at both ends, on different planes.
     
  8. #3965588 was for the big block stuff I think.

    #3965589 was for the small blocks.

    Both still look to be available to order from your local GM dealer. $6 to $10 range. :D

    Everyone threw them away back then,they were a pia to get up in there!
