Hi Chris, I've been told you have to either move the teeth in towards the center tooth or you have to cut a little of the side of the end tooth. The problem you run into is the sides of end teeth hit the side of the fender were it wraps in towards the grill cavity. Im still trying to find out the best way of making the grill fit.

I haven't messed with the column yet, but I took a picture out of my 1950 mercury owners manual. [IMG] I hope this helps. As for the engine, I'm planning on using a 302 sbf with a AOD.
    Thanks,

  4. Yeah whenever I've see Desoto teeth in a 49-51 grille opening, I've counted the teeth.

Car looks good. Get it driving, you'll be pretty jazzed driving around even if you don't have all the glass or any interior (like mine hehe).

you have to trim the end teeth down, its pretty easy to do, it just takes a few passes and they contour to the fender like it was meant to be. not sure if you got my PM, just make sure you stand back and look at everything, if you sink the grille pan too far in, the front bottom part of the teeth will be exposed, which looks odd to me when the bumper doesnt hide them, and if you sit the pan too far out, they look like a set of false teeth and you can see the backs of them..

Mike you can see in the pics where i mate the two together and the filler piece i fab for the rear of the pan..as far as bumpers i am partial to the merc bumpers..not to fond of the desoto bumpers, they look like they are ready to plow some snow..

Mike, good to talk to you at the swap meet yesterday. Had to come check out pics of your new project. I had that dream too, back in 1990. My project stalled and sat for 11 years before I let it go. I really like your plan of getting it drivable and work on it as you go. I'd probably still have mine had I done that.

If you decide you do want to go with a DeSoto bumper. let me know. I've got one in the rafters, you could borrow it to see what it would look like in mock up. It's got bumper gaurds that mimic the DeSoto teeth.

Bill, I had a good time talking to you at the swap meet. As for the bumpers, I haven't really decided on which front bumper I'm going to use. I'll keep you in mind if I decide to use one. Thanks again Bill

1950-Mercury: I see in Post #83, you found a set of rear quarter supports. Those are the pieces that go behind the rear wheels, almost like mud flaps that are hidden in the quarters.

Do you know where I can get a nice set for my 50 Merc?
