I'm trying to gauge interest in beefier front sway bars for '54-'56 Buicks. I had one prototyped, and just got the prices back. It's 1.00-inch diameter, with a spring rate of 500 lbs/ft. The stock bars are .690-inch dia, and 113 lbs/ft. It should firm up the ride without making anything harsh. It's a direct bolt-on replacement, comes powder coated black, and with urethane saddle and end link bushings. They fit all Buick models from '54, '55 and '56. It's going to take a small pile of money to get enough ordered at a crack to make it do-able. At $229 shipped to your door, how many would be interested? -Brad
I could definitely get in on this.. Do you have the prototype on a car yet? I'd like to hear some real world assessments.. That sounds a hell of a lot stiffer than stock, Which would help with roll obviously, But Im also concerned with how stiffening up the front end so much could possibly affect handling and create more understeer? Which I guess is better than Oversteer in the realm of a 56 Special estate wagon.. Im just thinking out loud here....
It's bolted up on my '54, but the '54 doesn't have an engine yet. Full suspension travel and steering was checked to make sure nothing interfered. It fits like original, its just beefier. A lot of aftermarket bars are 1.125-inch, and 800lbs/inch... I felt that was a bit too stiff for the Buicks. -Brad
i got a home made one on a 1960 invicta wagon looks to be over a inch and its got welded square corners, definately works great
Here's the '60 Chevy Impala anti-sway bar Carl's Hot Rods adapted to my '55 Special. Fit quite well with only a small amount of fabrication required (spacer blocks, lower control arm brackets - see pix), and coupled with an OEM Olds 442 rear anti-sway bar, it works very well. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us My '55 Special has a Chevelle 4-bar rear suspension. Sorry for making you stand on your heads to view the pix...
A few years back a guy with a '54 Buick needed a pattern for a 1.125 inch front sway bar to run the Panamerica (?). We used my stock one from my 1955 Special. For doing this he gave me one for my Buick. It works great, handles very good. I'm running the stock suspension with Fatmans 2" dropped spindles.
Excellent! Thanks guys. I'm working on getting the funds for the initial order on my end. Keep the comments coming! -Brad
Hey guys, I've got 50 boxes with '54-'56 Buick 1.00-inch sway bars in my basement, ready to ship. I posted an add in the classifieds here, but thought I'd bump up this thread too since you guys were directly interested. -Brad
