Sad News Big Willie Passed Away This Morning

It is with great sadness that I pass on the news, Big Willie Robinson passed away this morning around 5:00am and is now reunited with Tomiko. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. I will pass on service arrangements and up dates as things come about. God Bless them Both.

He was larger than life both literally and figuratively. I think of Big Willie, and I can't help but think of this song. Both were even from the same town... RIP Willie

R.I.P Big Willie I met him and Tomiko in around 76 at the Nassau Colliseum, he was there recruiting for the Street Racers,we swapped street racing stories. There were a bunch of us who had cars in the show, he had both of theirs there. He talked about one of the members of his group who would actually strip down to his underwear when he raced to save every ounce he could. I joined the Street Racers and I don't think I ever heard another word about it,other than what was in magazines. And man was he big.

The guy was cool. I remember when he tried to post here and people just tore in to him for no reason, but he stood his ground. The guy had my respect from the get go and was very knowledgeable about drag history and did a lot for the community trying to keep drag strips open.

Well, that sucks. I was about to mail off my letter to him. Yet one more man I wish I could have shook hands with.. But not worth his suffering. Good to hear he isn't suffering anymore..

Damn it. That knocked the wind out of me. What an interesting person with an interesting story and place in the hobby. I first learned of him and the Street Racers after watching Two-Lane Blacktop. I'm sure many were introduced that way.

 

As a member of the Brotherhood we will miss him! May my freind race in peace.

 

A big inspiration to me many years ago...........RIP.

 

Wow!, was just in Pedro and going over the Vincent Thomas Bridge and was looking at where the track use to be just an hour ago. RIP Willie

Spent a lot of nights out with Street Racers in the Alpha Beta lot deciding who would run who and where to go that night. Big Willie brought us all together and kept us in line and he will be forever missed.
Truly the end of an era.
