I was given this truck today. It's huge. It's a 61 GMC 4000 that runs. It has a 305 cu in V-6 witha 5spd trans and set up for a PTO. It also as air brakes front and rear. It was an airport tanker truck and then converted to the stake bed. Anybody got an idea of what this thing weighs? It has been kept inside for most of it's 51 yrs and the body shows it. The only rust is in the outer door skins and is very small. I'm not sure what to do with it but the price was right.

The last owner drove it from Nebraska to southeast Missouri about 10 yrs ago and has been using it as a log hauler. He retired and is moving out of state so the truck had to go. I hauled a 35 Ford pickup pile of parts for the guy and he gave me this truck in trade.

Cool truck, is that the muffler under the front bumper? How is that six is it really a boat anchor or is there some torque to pull it around? I love that era nose, nice score

Yep, muffler under the front bumper to keep it away from the jet fuel. I havn't tried to start it yet, it needs a battery.

Make it a car hauler. or worst case,ya got the cab, grill and hood and you can bolt it to a half ton frame and find a bed and reg fenders.

You could haul logs with it. Or anything else that weighs a lot and doesn't have to move very fast. The 305 is the baby V6, the 478 is the one you want. They look the same.

When I was 18 I has a job. Part of my job was to run the stake truck to the warehouse a few times a week. Another guy would go and we would take turns driving. There was a pretty narrow bridge on the state rt., so one day we get this idea that we will try to time it so we can go over the bridge with a oncoming tractor trailer. It took a few weeks until the moment arrived. I still remember looking down at that old gray steel dash just before we went over the bridge with that tanker. Wow what a moment in time that was. The shit you do when you are a stupid kid.... JC

  10. Hey Ed,
That is really cool, my dad was a truck mechanic for GMC from 1960 till he retired in the late 80's. I remember growing up crawling all over these type of trucks. We loved that 305 v6 in a 1968 pickup with a 4spd & a 4.10 gear, it pulled everything.

  11. I would love to have that thing!

The interior rust will wipe off with some CLR and the rest of the truck will clean up too.

You would be THE MAN at Home Depot on a Saturday!

Clean it up and keep it...

You were wondering about the weight....

My 63 F600, 292 Y block, with 16 foot flatbed dump, steel deck, with the sideboards on, weighs 10K right on the money.

My guess on your truck would be 8500 to 9k lbs.
