I've got a 1960 Olds, that i'm trying to get the front spring out. I got everything else loose but the ball joint on the lower A arm won't drop down.
I've used a ball joint fork on a air hammer, torch, porta power, leverage. I cannot get it loose from the bushing.

Any thoughts? What am I missing?

if you haven't mushroomed out the threads... thread the castle nut on upside down so it is flush with the top of the threads and hit it with an air hammer. It should let loose.

That's a bolt-on steering arm covering the ball joint boss, isn't it? Take it off, then get a big hammer and smack the boss hard while applying some leverage to the spindle. That will shock the thing into separating. Hit it as close to a right angle to the stud as possible. It will probably take a few hard hits if it's really tight.
I have a lever-action ball joint tool that would work, too, but you still have to whack it to get things to move. Whatever you do, do NOT hit the end of the threaded stud if the ball joint is still any good! If it's shot, though, that will get it apart.

Support the brake drum with some wooden blocks and let the spring push down against the unbolted ball joint. As cafekit said , put the nut on upside down and shock it with the blunt end of an air hammer. Sometimes it takes heat plus all of that to break free a rusted up one.

    Do what this guy said!

You never hit a balljoint directly on the thread [ as in the hammer marks I see in the pics ]
Hit the boss at 90degrees and the jolt on the taper will squeeze it out. I usually leave the nut on by a couple of threads to stop bits flying around when it comes loose.
I have never ever needed heat or a balljoint remover using the above method

Exactly as Kerry says. A couple of good hard whacks on the side of the taper boss will work every time. Make sure you hit it square on rather than a glancing blow. As stated, a nut screwed on a couple of threads will stop it flying apart.

  7. Also, clean off the surface you're whacking. Grease and dirt can absorb some of the shot.

  8. Like it was stated above let the energy in the spring help you. Use a 2lb ball peen hammer and give several sharp square hits on the side of the lower A arm lug, it will come off. However, be careful of the spring, it will fly when the bolt lets go. Keep a block of wood under the spring so it does not launch across the shop. Good luck.
