I've just bought another FE to replace my old 352 and was wondering if anyone could help identify the casting codes i have so i know which bits would be best to salvage from the old engine. The exhaust manifolds are rotting on the new one so ideally would like to use the good ones from the 352 but they seem to have a slightly smaller exit bore.

    Mercury (352 ?)
    Block - C1AE 6015 G
    Heads - C1AE 6090 A
    Intake - C2AE 9425 D
    Exhaust - C1AE 9430 D & C1AE 9431 B

    Galaxie (390 ?)
    Block - C3AE H
    Heads - C4AE 5090 G
    Intake - C1AE 9425 B
    Exhaust - C3SE 9430 G & C3SE 9161 B

Very little, in many cases, can be learned from FE casting numbers. But I can help you with whatever I can. But you have a very typical '64ish 390 there, not too interesting and nothing to really figure out. What is it you want to decide or figure out??

I was wondering if i could, or whether it would be worth bothering to, use the heads and exhaust manifolds from the 352?

Like Pete is saying, casting numbers are no use for Ford FE. But if you have a '64 ish FE you need to watch out when rebuilding. Around 64 they started using a new type cam and timing set.... Official this happend in 62/63 but my "64 390 had the old style cam and timing gear. See topic:

Good luck on your 390 on this side of the pond ;-)

Probably a small gain at best. But if they are in better shape or if you plan on rebuilding the heads either way, I would use the C1s.
As for the exhaust, I do not think there is much difference in any of the log style manifolds. I can tell you the C3s offer no HPgain for sure. So if you want to use the C1s, do it. Nothing will be hurt at all, perhaps even helped.

Thanks for the info so quickly guys.

does it matter that the C3 manifolds have a larger exit bore than the C1's ?

A log manifold is a log manifold. Meaning, I doubt it makes that much difference. You could certainly improve on exhaust manifolds from these if you want better exhaust.

The C3SE manifolds were prob from a t-bird. It wont matter which ones you use

upon further inspection the bore is exacly the same  it just appears bigger because it has been repaired badly in the past, someone has welded threaded rods to the casting which are slightly further apart than standard which is why when i measured it up and saw the larger diameter down pipes i assumed the bore was bigger. Even more reason to change them over !! :)
