I think this is traditional powerplant.....283 SBC with a 4GC carb,Hope you like.

This is a little superstock engine we build and tune on,Has been a multi time NHRA record holder and we are going back at it.
Its in for a freshen and hopefully squeeze some more out of it...
we baselined it today to see how much it was off before taking it apart..
When it left the shop the last time it made 512 HP..Runs low 11's in a 3950 lb car

Lots of rules in this class....GM head castings from the 60's,stock valve sizes,Port size rule,10:5 to 1 Comp ....Must use the Rochester 4GC 4barrel
    Among others.....
This motor leaves the starting line at 9300 and he shifts it at 8800rpm
We ran it to 8500 today

    Turn up the speakers...enjoy

    Tony

  3. Wow, I guess that's what they mean by a screaming smallblock. Almost painful to listen to. What CR is it and what fuel?

    10:5 to 1 on VP C12 gas

  5. love it. I remember the dyno guys faces when we first built a 260ci sbc for Bonneville 2.5in crank...made power to 9900. After we tuned it, we made a pull and told them to hold it at redline for 1 minute to check durability....THAT was a long minute..but it did the job, set a record later that August. we didnt have that much compression for a race motor either, had to get it with such a short stroke, I think it was about 12:1, where we like to have 15:1...

Refer to the above video to explain why i like SBCs, in addition to Flatties, FEs, Ponchos, Nailheads, Boss 9s, etc, ad nauseum. Sounds very good.

I am building a FED nostalgia dragster with a 265 bored .125 to 283 C.I. Hilborn injection 11to 1 compression roller cam rockers. I am tired of going to the nostalgia meets and seeing only 392 Hemi FED. Plan on turning it 9,000 rpm in a very light car. Maybe I can show thos 392 how a small block can run. Sneaky Pete Robinson did it.

    Damn... just... damn...

I realize you can't give away all your secrets, but I'm sure I speak for a lot of us when I say we would joyfully read EVERY bit of tech you could provide about that engine.

It sounds nice, but it aint no 8500 rpms.... I think you ment 7500.... Sounds typical.....

283s are like little anvils. I have one with powerpak heads, I am trying to sell.

I have seen them and heard them turn 9500.... When a small block gets to 8500 it starts to sound like a 2 stroke..... very distinctive over 8

would love to hear some details. (cam specs ??) how much flow out of those heads once you finish porting and working them. (1.6 to 1 roller or 1.7 to 1 roller rockers

any details would be helpful to those of us not as experience in making big HP out of small motors.

No it was 8500.... I would know
If you look at the tach on the computor screen you can see the other pull I posted it was run to 8000

Better ck your Ignition.... my small and big inch SBC's never sound like 2 strokes

9300 launch and a 8800 shift point? Holy shit that is one bad ass SBC! I would love to see some video with it running in the car.Very impressive, good luck going for the record.

Gee Tony, I dunno... you've only been running that engine for how long? And you've spent how much time on the dyno? It's TOTALLY possible that you not only don't recognize the sound difference between 7,500 and 8,500 while you were standing right next to it, but isn't it possible that you could have misread the dyno's tach AND the numbers on the dyno sheets when you were done? It's either that, or you typed it wrong every time in your post.

Because surely, the guy who's running the 2-stroke small-block Chevy's knows what he's talking about based on the sounds coming from the speakers on his computer. After all, he's seen them and heard them run past 8,500rpm, and he's got one with PowerPak heads in his shed.

I don't think it's his ignition that needs to be checked.

    -Brad

(and hey, if you don't want to publicly post the specs on that engine, can you send me a PM? I LOVE tech...)

Nice job Tony,,,,,,,,,,there are always doubters out there...

  29. You guys running stock type heads amaze me. We cheat and use huge heads. We ran PRO heads cnc ported by them in the beginning. I think we got about 2.4hp/ci before we moved classes.
