Hi guys, Has anyone here grafted an original 34 Ford center crossmember into a model A frame to run their flathead and 39 trans? Any thoughts? I read in "The Ford Speed Manual" that it is preferred over the 32 crossmember because you can drop the trans without removing the motor. Thanks! Sam
32 frame would be nice, but I am stuck with the A frame. I'm thinking the 34 crossmember legs are taller than the sides of the A frame?
Dagel's Street Rods offer a nicely engineered "X" styled cross member. http://www.dagelsstreetrods.com/super_x_crossmember.htm The Chassis Engineering 32 cross member can be used as well. http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/page44.html Both of the above cross members will need a custom fabricated transmission mount. 35-48 Ford "X" style center cross members can be adapted as well. But the best option is one of Vern Tardell's 32 style mounts. It is an engineered solution that works. With a torque tube drive line you have two choices when swapping out a transmission. You can pull the rear end back and drop the transmission from below which requires some sort of lift and will require disconnecting the brake lines. The other option is to pull the motor and transmission as a unit. Take your pick.
