Rocket is a marketing name, not a seperate model. when they introduced the V-8 in 1949 they had a "76" with a inline 6 engine and a "98" with an inline 8 engine, they were originally going to install the V-8 in the "98" series only, but someone had the bright idea of stuffing one into the "76" and and called it the "Rocket 88" thereby giving birth to the modern day muscle car. in 1956 there were 3 basic models of Oldsmobile, the "88" which had a 2 bbl. carburetor (and sometimes came with "the dual-range" hydra-matic leftover from 1955),the "Super 88" which had a 4 bbl. carburetor (all of these had the new "controlled-coupling" hydramatic"),and the "98" which was a 4 bbl. with a 4 inch longer wheelbase.
did anyone see barret jackson last nite, they had a sweet 56 88 was going for 45000 when i hit the remote!
OK then what was the Holiday just the one with the most bells and whistles? My Uncle had a 56 white over black 4 door super 88 Hardtop. Nice car.
Try OCA "Oldsmobile club of America" on line. They have a web site, you will have to register and log in. They have alot of info.
hey all, i've been doig some olds research for my next project. check out this thread right here on the hamb. it'll make your head explode. awsome info. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47584&highlight=oldsmobile+324 also check out these links for some good oldsmobile reading. http://www.oldsclub.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile
Good stuff, Yorgi. The way to tell if your '56 Olds is a Super 88 is the regular 88 doesn't have stainless trim around the windows and the 88 is just taht: an 88, the Super 88 has a chrome circle around the 88 on the fender badges. The Super 88 has a horn ring, the 88 has a button. You've come to the right place, Sonny. The HAMB has more Rocket info than the Olds Club. Post a pic and become a Rocketeer.
the external differences on the exterior is a different 88 emblems on the fenders, (supers has a circular disc behind the 88s ) , larger trunk mounted emblem, and a 88 emblem on the trunk with a rocket taking off on the left side. As for the interior , the super got chrome ribs across the headliner. Damn, should have looked at the Post date! Sorry.
The 88 had a 2 barrel carb while the Super 88 had a 4 barrel. The interior in the Super 88 was a bit nicer and had more options. The plain 88 was the lower priced model while the Super 88 cost a bit more for power and luxury options back in the 50s.
4 barrel & dual exhaust were options on '56 Olds Deluxe 88. 4 barrel standard equipment on Super 88, dual exhaust optional.
