Just joined , My son and I are building a 1948 dodge truck rat rod together and we both will need some question answered over the build. We have built other projects but never a hemi . We pumped to get started ,still lots of snow in great white north,so we'll start soon.Look forwaed to all the members input and knowledge. Thanks PT and Squid
Yes we don't do rat rods here. Welcome. If you really want a rat so be it. Just not here! We do traditional rods. Check it out.
If my memory serves me correctly the rods that I grew up with in the 60 s which were traditional rods are now refered to as rat rods . My thoughts are build what you like ,but build it safe and enjoy the hobby . Some people snubb their nose at any hot rod be it a traditional rod or rat rod .
Welcome from Mississippi! You and the son building something together is significant and worth sharing. The (R R ) term is generally discouraged on this site, with some expressing their displeasure more vehemently than others. You and your son build a safe hot rod and enjoy the experience.
Welcome. Nice to work with your son besides you,I have a 3 year old that "helps" me often. 1948 dodges are not bad looking. A couple guys are working on one of those here on the HAMB. Check Nikki's build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=469942 Traditional rod means build it like a guy would build it in the 50's. No shiny 20" rapper wheels. No Easter egg paint job. Rat rod means That your truck has extreme modifications just to "shock" people and it usually means unsafe... You can put any kin of aftermarket suspension and drivetrain on your 48 as long as you keep it tucked in and the hood close... Also these fine folks dont like to be shown newer engines with the latest billet additions. Paint the exterior to a nice solid color or a two tone paint job or keep the patina if you like. You dont need to throw thousands of dollars into your truck. Keep it safe, simple, classy and fun with your son. good luck. RAT ROD is the ugly picture and traditional is the second one... Now go and build it! (BTW I am no expert here, just giving you the walk around, from newbie to newbie)
If you dont think I know about traditional rods take a look at my photo ablum. Im 57 years young and as I stated the trad rods looked alot like some of the rat rods now . Look back to where hot rods started no fancy paint or billet parts , just guys and gals having fun with building their cars and enjoying them . I like all rods , and the hard work to build them ,most of all enjoy the hobby and form great relationshiphs with fellow gear heads .
