Projects My 34 Chevrolet 3 Window Coupe, racer?

I thought I'd go about posting up some pictures and info on my new project. I was told it was a 34 but I cant say for sure as it doesn't have any markings or tags left on it. Also I'm unsure if its a standard or master, I know one way to tell was by the dash but thats gone. Anyway I didn't get too much info from the previous owner as it changed hands a few times. It does have the #44 painted on the doors and the name "Bud Grove" on the driver side so it could have been raced at one time? I basically got the body and chassis but not much else in the purchase. All the wood was removed from the body and it looks to be partially reinforced with steel in a backyard hillbilly kinda way. The top was chopped 3" in the same fashion and may take a bit to sort out. My plans are for a nice low original styled rod for cruising around and taking to some shows and the jalopy drags. I have a mildly built 327 lined up for the power plant and I plan to slap a 4 speed behind it. I would like some suggestions for the front and rear suspension and what I may be able to use with the stock chassis(it will be boxed). I'll quit yappin and get to the pictures, comments and suggestions are appreciated!

Nice old Chevy. It's definitely a 34 or 35. The difference between the two is one had the cowl vent open towards the front of the car and the other opened towards the windshield. I believe the 34 opened facing the windshield. Check to see if the hinges are still there. Good luck with your project. There is a lot of info on this site to help you along.

Well I love those old chevies and are worth the challanges involved. You have a vision and a plan so I am sure you will suceed and have a fun hot rod. I do not know the differances between masters and standard. I think there was a thread or described in a thread the differances in the past couple weeks on here.

I believe all master's would have been suicide doors, and 112" ('34) and 113"('35) wheel base. Yours looks to be a Standard and wheelbase should be 107"

I think it is a 33 standard , short wheelbase car, not too hard to fashion tubing inside the body on that one...good luck..

33's had a different cowl and firewall. It's a 34 or 35...

Check out this build thread for your steel structure.
Steel structuring a 34 chevy 3 window.

If you have the trunk lid, and its wood structured, it's a standard.
If steel structured it's a master. I believe it to be a standard 34. Nice find.

I would urge you to retain your Chevy's character by installing a parallel leaf/beam axle front end. For some reason everybody seems to think a Hot Rod has to have a Ford front end -even when the car is not Ford. While I own a couple Fords, I recognize that the chassis design is archaic and doesn't work as well as what most other brands were using in the '30s.

The stock Ford chassis design is as good as it gets with rigid axles from a freedom of articulation aspect IMO. Ford certainly wasn't the big innovator as far as new chassis technology was concerned, but their designs were proven to work.

Unless I tried to build a full fendered restoration I would certainly use a Ford style suspension. Availability is a big factor as well.

It is a very good looking body style BTW.

I'll have to double check but i dont think theres much of anything left on the inside of the firewall or cowl, maybe from weight reduction in its racing days? As for the trunk lid its just sheet metal with no metal structure to it so I assume there was once wood reinforcing it. I almost didnt buy it because the lack of parts and I thought the price was a little steep. I slept on it and decided to go for it and I'm glad I did, I figured how many chances am I going to get to score a steel bodied 34? I know I have a ton of work ahead of me I'm almost unsure where to start haha. Thanks for the help and encouragement!

I can't say for the body but the frame doesn't look like a Master "Y-K" frame. It looks like the standard frame. See page 102 here 1934 Chevy Repair Manual .

Looks good! As far as the suspension goes when we built my 34 chevy we used the ford style front suspension and I beam trailing arms with coil overs in the rear. That car handled and drove nice! It also had a small block with a 4 speed. Good luck with your build

Your body is a 34 Standard. I can say that by looking at the Cage Nuts for the rear fenders. Were it a Master the Cage Nuts would be around the body reviele not on the inside of the wheel house. Also a 35 does not use a gas tank cover, it's part of the body. The Master is a taller body most noticable by the Grill. Master and Standard doors do not interchange. You got some work ahead of ya buddy. So did I when I started. Oh, and Master fenders, front or rear do not interchange either.

Glasshole gotta say your 34 is badass man! Nailhead you have some pictures of your 33? And the termites have been there done that apparently, not a splinter of wood anywhere inside the body. Thanks to those that helped confirm its a 34 standard! I'm lookin forward to my week off so I can get some work done on her!

Ya could be early 35 they look the same just depends on the way the cowl vent opens
