Hello Everybody! So I have been looking and looking trying to find out how to "split" the original manifold on my 263 Buick Straight 8. I see everybody doing the inline 6 chevy stuff, but I am curious to know if somebody has a how to on the original straight 8 manifold? I am sending it down to Kraig from Splitz manifold, but curious as to how it will be done. Thanks for your help. Chuck
Buick did it for you. In 1940-41 they used their so-called compound dual carburetor set-up with a split exhaust. That is probably the best solution. Otherwise, the idea was to take the original exhaust and cut a slot to accept a blocking plate in the middle of the manifold. Basically divide off half the cylinders. Then weld (braze) the slot closed to seal in the plate. Cut a hole in the blocked off side and weld on an exhaust flange. Done.
Yeah I know about the 41 compound, but would like to do the split job. Thank you for your help, anybody have any pictures of it being done?
The ones I have seen "done" were not too pretty. These were "back in the day" using Gotha brand flanges by shade tree mechanics. Usually lots of excess braze or bubblegum stick welding on that tricky cast iron. I bet your guy has better technology at his disposal. Once you get it back, post up a photo and you might be able to change my (antiquated) opinion. Speaking of Buicks... Nice spring-like day here. I think that I will take the '37 coupe out and open up those compound carbs!
http://forums.aaca.org/attachments/...upercharged-320-straight-8-462418-intake8.jpg I really like the way this guy split his intake setup. I may do something similar. Also, if you can get a hold of last months street rodder there was a really cool rig with a buick 320. Some pictures of that setup are below. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cZhscTwtT...LdE/s1600/fordroadster1927stevegr+%281%29.jpg
This thread will give you a good explanation. There really isn't a lot of difference between the split 6 and the split 8 exhaust: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=260399
'41 -'42 Buick 320" dual carb was good for 165 or 170 horses depending on where you read it. Cadillac division was pissed about it, Buick wasn't allowed to use it after the war.
Hi Guys, Nobody knows the Teambuick site ?? Under "Straight Eight" are many Information about this Themes. Jens
Jyrki has some more info on his homepage about that setup. Togheter with alot of nice buick modifications for his 46. http://www.roadmachine.fi/Buick/april2004.html http://www.roadmachine.fi/Buick/EFI5.html
Buick made it a pain in the ass to get a 4-4 split, as exhaust ports #4 and 5 are at the center and dump into a common plenum. You'd have to do some creative blocking inside to split the manifold into two equal halves. Most guys lived with a 5-3 on these engines.
