    Dad's 56 from around 1976. Back when I was handing him tools and shining the trouble light in his eyes.

    Like most of you guys, I guess I was "born" to be a hot rodder. My Dad was an incredible, ambitious guy who co-founded a car club, our local Delaware (IN) Timing Association and built Muncie Dragway by the time he was 26. Up to the time he had to sell everything to build the dragstrip, he had some cool stuff...a couple I have been trying to find with no luck. Most importantly, I have many great memories of Dad to keep forever.

    I wish I had ALL the pics of my dad's old rides. I only have 1 with him in his blue 64 Impala SS and only have 1 hubcap left, but he had dozens of Chevy (55-57) cars with 56 being his favorite. His 56 Chevy 150 destroyed the H-Stock world record at the time with experimental parts from Isky himself (cam and rings) and my old mans own ingenuity. He ordered a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere 2dr HardTop 426 Hemi 4spd steel nose car (VERY VERY VERY EARLY production) and a long story short, he had to return it to the dealer and it was resold instantly and the very next weekend , the new owner won a complete Max Wedge for winning. :( He always had killer rides and built some very clever combos which everyone thought was wrong, but he always proved them wrong. :) Also, he bought his mother a brand new car with cash at the age of 12 working his ass off...

    Here is a then and now picture. Not sure when where or why the old shot was taken but I'm guessing it was before some sort of parade. I'm the third generation owner of the car and the second picture is in its current form including hopped up banger! My goal this year is to make it the jalopey showdown!

    He was more proud of his 110 pound turtle than he was his new 1950 Buick ... That day anyway ...

    December 15,1946. 21 years old and fairly fresh outta the Navy indulging his wanderlust. This particular Ford never made it back to Ohio,seems he traded it off to some moonshiners in N. Georgia for a 'warmed up' version and some 'shine'...

    My Dad, Steve Slonaker, was into a lot of different types of vehicles. He was into bikes, scooters, muscle cars, sports cars, stock cars, and hotrods. He didn't get his first HAMB friendly car until the mid 1980s. It is the yellow '37 coupe in my avatar.

    He also built a '33 or '34 Ford stock car in the 60s that his buddy raced at Pan American Raceway in San Antonio and a 60s Mopar of some kind that another buddy raced at Altus Speedway in Altus, OK in the 70s.

    He died 8 years ago at the age of 61. I still have his coupe, '58 Triumph Tiger Cub, '71 Moto Guzzi Ambassador, Vespa, water cooled Honda scooter, and '73 BMW 2002. I sold his turbocharged Chrysler minivan, Toyota 4WD, and SBC powered Jag XJ12.

    My dad in 1944 in the Panama Canal Zone in his first car - a Ford V-8 powered quarter midget. He used to zoom around the Canal Zone in this thing until he put it through the side of a barn and the base commander made my grandad take it away from him.

    When I was 13 years old Dad brought this home - and got me infected with Alfa Disease - an incurable attraction to Alfa Romeos even though you know they are bad for you. This was total departure from the usual string of Ford Country Squire Station Wagons that normally transported the family.

  27. My obsession with cars came from my dad. He drug me along with him when I was a toddler to the drag races and I was handing him wrenches starting from about the same time.

    His first car was a nondescript Model A coupe, which he immediately changed the intake on and added two carburetors. Here it is....circa 1959.

    I'll ask him what kind of intake it was.

    Karrera;
    That midget is a regular, full-size early midge. not a 3/4. (TQ)

    My Dad, (Joe Gertler Sr.) built Hundreds of customs, hotrods, sports racers, midgets, sprints, and customs for major shows, in his Raceway Garage, in the Bronx, (and did a lot off race car restoration later, in Riverhead, LI) from 1939-1990. Many of which can be seen on my website.

    I recently found this among hundreds of his original old car negatives of all those cars. he looks pretty cool in his Sunday leather coat and broad brim hat. Can anyone ID the car for me? that is one Large door...on that thing.
