I've got a GM 10 bolt rearend not sure from what. I've been thinking of doing a rear disc brake swap using boneyard parts. What is the simplest way to do this without spending vast amout of money? And also still being able to use aftermarket 15" steel Wheels ?

Check out the latest Car Craft. It seems that some third-gen Camaros came with rear discs and 15" wheels. The brackets (supposedly) fit older 10 and 12 bolt GM rears as well.

  3. Guess that depends on the rear you have. The 70's Camaro/Firebird use a regular looking four bolt flange on the end of the housing and some of these cars actually came with disc brakes as an option.

However, the "metric" cars of the late 70's to mid/late 80's (think Malibu/Cutlass Supreme/ Buick Regal etc) used an unusual flange ... something like two small bolts on the bottom of the flange and one HUGE one on the top of the flange ... I do not think any of that style ever left the factory with rear discs.

You need to find out what you have before you can start looking for a disc setup.

man, seems like lots of brake questions today lol......

are you handy with a welder?

if so, this is what i do.

    brake calipers
    http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/Weldon.html

go buy some loaded 3/4 ton front chevy 4x4 calipers.

find some slip on rotors that have your bolt pattern. normally newer vehicles still use rotors that have the same pattern.

brake pins are cheap, and mid 80's monte carlo front brake lines are easy/cheap to install.

some hard lines and a T fitting to one single brake line......

so for about 300 bucks you can have brakes on it

This is what I did on my '48. The calipers clear with 1/2" of clearance on a 15" wheel.

    For example:

GM Metric front brake calipers, or rears, with a parking brake:

    Front: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1978-88-Replacement-GM-Midsize-Metric-Calipers,35786.html

    -or-

    Rear: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Emergency-Brake-Calipers,1968.html

Weld on brackets from a race supplier, such as Speedway: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-Weld-On-Flat-Mount-Standard-Caliper-Brackets,3348.html

Rotors such as these, should work: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Replacement-11-1-4-Inch-Rear-Rotor,23464.html

Look under the rear end of a 1979-up Cadillac Eldorado. You will likely find almost everything but the caliper mounting brackets there.

if you have a manual transmission, high angle driveline has a driveshaft parking brake that goes on the back of the transmission...... i had one on 2 different trucks..... by using the differential to multiply the leverage its works GREAT

I'm bumping this one back up. I was looking to convert my rear end to disc brakes and keep my 15" wheels on my '54. Does anyone know of a kit that will work?
I have a 7.5 10 bolt with the weird flange the "borntoloze" describes in post #3
Speedway has a kit that fits the rear end, but not 15" wheels.
And the rear end is powder coated, so the above recommendation of welding on a bracket doesn't work for me.

Edit, I think this one is what I need.
